How to Repair a Rubbing Gas Door

I was detailing my car one day, when I noticed that my gas door was rubbing against my quarter panel. It was rubbing off the paint and just didn’t look right. So I decided then and there to fix the door once and for all. For this job, all you need are some 3/16 washers, a grinder (preferred), and a pair of pliers.

Instructions

  1. Take 6 or 8 washers, depending on how far the door needs to be shimmed. Using the grinder, grind off part of the washer so that it will fit around the screw holding the gas door in place.
  2. Next, loosen the two outer most screws, but do not remove them.
  3. Simply pry the gas door from the body and shim 3 or 4 washers between the gas door and the body. Once the shims are in place, simply tighten the screw down. Repeat the same process for the bottom screw.

It’s hard to believe, but that’s it. Your gas door will be back to its original position and will fix an often overlooked detail. No more rubbing on your paint job and it will now be symmetrical all the way around.
