help with tires

Well its been a good 3 years now, but my rear tires are gone....wear line is gone, tread is gone, all i have left now is a slick (how could this have happened??? ) so now i'm looking for new tires. I think i found the tires i like http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes. The tires i have on there now are 245/50/r16 all around, but i'm thinking of going a bit larger in the rear. may help with the speedo being slightly off too since putting 3.73 rear in (i got a new VSS for it but its still off).

so i guess i'd like to know what size youre running (preferably on stock 16" rims), and dont leave out any cars that have different size tires in front and back, since i found out a few years ago that i cant swap my front and rear rims.

any help is appreciated since i think i need to get new rear tires soon lol

Re: help with tires

i forgot to add....how would making the rear tires slightly larger affect the handling of the car?

and also i plan on lowering the car an inch or 1.5 inches once i rebuild my hurricane sandy-stricken 350 i was about to put in. so i dont want to go too crazy large in the rears

There are only 3 choices in street performance 245-50-16 tires today and you linked to the best one (I would never pay $1k for the Goodyears). You can get a 255-50-16 tire in the BFG, but honestly you would need a wider wheel to make it work optimally (9" wheel for a 10" wide tire).

You can also use a 225-55-16 tire on an 8" wheel (BMW has been for years), which will give the same overall diameter with a more stable sidewall - plus there are about 15 street performance tires in that size today.

Re: help with tires

how wide are the stockers? i would have thought my stock GTA rims were wider than 9". and so you think just stick with the 245/50r16's?

Gta wheels are 16x8. 245/50/16 is about it. There are a few 255's out there but not much

Re: help with tires

the tires i'm looking at come in 255/50r16. but you guys think those would be too big? i kinda like the idea of wider tires, even though i've got a worn out 305 tpi (178k miles) the 3.73's still smoke the 245's with no problem.

i think i can fit the 255's, but would it just look bad?

Re: help with tires

Something that hasn't been mentioned is that not all 245/50/16 sizes are the same. Different brands will have difference height and width despite having the exact same rating. The Michelins I have on my car are taller and narrower than the same size Goodyears that were on there before.

So I wouldn't sweat the difference between 245 and 255 tires.

Re: help with tires

For what it's worth, I really liked the G-Force Sports on the 944 I had. They gripped well at autocross and lasted a long time. I didn't get a chance to wear them out all the way using the car as a DD for 5 years before I sold it. But, a given tire can act vastly different on another car. Yokohama ES100s worked fine for a lot of other cars but got greasy on 944s for example.

Re: help with tires

i have yokohoma avid something-or-others currently. they no longer make them i've found which is why i need to get new tires. its reassuring to hear the bfg's dont wear out quickly. someone once convinced me to put falkens on all around, they gripped pretty good, but didnt last. they were worn out basically over the winter lol
