Could we get a picture of the lips you will be working on to help with determining the repair procedure.

Sand off the corrosion and polish the lip. That's not that bad at all, looks far worse than it actually is. Being that aluminum is so soft, you can easily sand off the imperfections. You can even remove pretty big curb marks if they aren't too deep.

I would sand with 180, 220, 320, 320wet, 400, 400wet, 600, 600wet, then follow with polishing compounds on buffing wheels. Tripoli, white, then jewelers rogue. Others on here continue to sand in steps then follow with metal polish. They would probably continue to sand with 600, 800, 1000, 1500 and 2000 before polishing. Works the same just takes a lot more time and work sanding. I've done both and much prefer the finish and process of polishing with compounds on a corded drill with buffing wheels. There is a sticky in the appearance and detailing board about polishing your wheels, that has the info you need. In that thread the "poishing vs buffing" link is very useful.

Didn't see your first pic too well on my phone, but now I better see the paint your talking about. If you paint the wheel black, make sure to sand the surface smooth or you'll get the same finish as the pic you posted. Could just be my being a perfectionist, but the finish on those wheels leaves a lot to be desired. I'm currently in the process of painting the inserts and inside of my polished wheels graphite, and it takes a good amount of time as well. Then again, I've block sanded both the inserts and insides of my wheel, in an attempt to get a mirror finish on my paint too, which is a little time consuming.
