Did. the 6.5 back space. on My 3rd gen. With weld rts wheels
ok. over the last 20+ years. i have Had my 92 Z28. i have always had Weld Wheels on it (Drag Lites).. then i wanted new ss brake lines..
doing this new eng swap (427 sbc)
it started to snow ball on me.
427 (and a long list with it. from top to bottom)
get a new set of heads (AFR 220s) why use the old set?
full canton racing oil pan/oiling set up (why use the old Milodon set up)
then came!
new headers (hooker3310 why use the old SLP)
K member (sphon)
A arms..(sphon)
coil overs...(sphon)
WT jacks for the back (GC)
adj Panrod
adj LCA
REPLACE all steering Linkage..(and have plated)
new NOS set up.. (like the new bottles.. better get 2)
New seats (Recaro profi XL) (so i keep new factry seats looking like new)
super charger (every body els has them now) V1 T trim Cog drive..Polished.
SS brake lines all way round.(hey might has well get Calipers to go with the Lines)
willwood calipers
new tires MT sportsmen (might get a set of new wheels to put them on. and show off brakes)
every thing is now sitting at Home.. and summer is just starting.
new wheels.. (and now this)
and alot of stuff i forget..
Well has you can see.. the list is getting long.. so ill get to the point.
with installing new willwood parts on the car. i wanted to show them off. like most of us do. and with the drag lites you would not see them. so i started looking for a new set of wheels. had a set of the
Billet street lights. sent to me..everybody and there dog. has a set. and after looking at them.. i had to pass.. ok wheels.. but a bit bissy to keep Clean. (alot of small spaces) to hard to keep clean..(for me)i like my wheels to look like chrome!! when polished.(it takes work) but the small spaces.look not so good.
Then had a set of center line 721s set to me.. well i had to pass also.
way way. to hvy for me. and the Hubs has thick.. as a Tank! (no thank you)
So then i had a set of the new weld RT-S71's sent to me.. and WOW! i like them. clean lines. lite. and easy to keep clean like drag lites.
now comes the part im looking forward to.. (i think)
getting has much back space on the wheels has i can.so they look good!
GOING OVER THIS SITE! i see over and over. about the 6.5 back space will work.. so Im going to do it! what ever it takes. to get them on. and working.. removing bump stops and beating and cutting iner fenders. it will be done!
the first set all 4 wheels are orderd Low pads.= (fits smallish brake calipers)
the first set i orded. was a 15x10 with a 5.5 back space(I know)Part#71LP-510B55A
just to see what it looked like.. and yes it set almost even with the rear outer fender lip. the wheel it's self looked good.test fitting looked like i would still have to make room.. (bump stop) but lets see what a 6.5 would look like.
side note: AT THIS POINT IN TIME!
mocking every thing up in my front room (im singl) and it's my house.
Fitting the the Low pad front wheels 15x3.5
i see they touch my willwood calipers by about a Hair.
so now i go up to 15x3.5 in a med pad.= fits a bit larger then stock brake calipers.
part #71MP-503B06A
Now. the front wheels fit. with all the new brake parts. and looks good.
and to keep things looking the same.front/back. i also orderd a new set of back wheels in med pads.part #71MP-509B65A= 15X9 6.5 back space med pad.thinking the 9" rim would work for my tires. and it would.. but the front off set with the Med pad looked just like my front wheels(i did not like)
So now comes the 3rd set of rear wheels part # 71LP-510B65A= 15x10 6.5b/s Low pads
by the way the weld rts wheels are a true 10.275 inch wide. not just 10" wide
so the over all outside rim to outside rim is a full 11.5"inch a bit more them most!
and when your install bigger tires then the everyday 275 60 15. this would be need to know stuff
sticking with Lowpad wheels in the rear. they fit my Factry Calipers. below left. lowpad wheel
did not like the way it looked like this. but if you do. front # is71MP503B06A Rear#71MP509B65A

Re: doing the 6.5 back space. on My 3rd gen. weld rts wheels
it's been to cold and rainy to do anything untill this weekend..spring is upon us!
so today i started the bump stop removal..
so i could install this set of itty bitty tires under my 25th anniversery Z28
after the first few cuts..the first wheel & tire are on. making full contact. at hub running lugnuts down with fingers.just need just another 1/2 inch so side wall clears inner fender. the offset LCAs also clear By 1/2" inch.
you can order the LCA's with the offset bushings save a few bucks,
the cross sec of this set of tires is 13" inch (lca's are from founders )
bump stop removed. make sure you get all the tackwelds, and the outer Plates. just Fall away!
after making the 2 side and top cut to remove the bumpstops.
use a heat gun(wire wheel grinder is alot faster!) to make getting the nasty stuff off easy, so you can see the spot/tack welds. then drill them out.
OR just cut the bumpstops out ,cutting all the way into this flimsy thin sheet. you can weld a better looking/thicker steel sheet in it's place. if you like but this thing thats left if you drill out the welds is nothing more then a dust cover..
front lower inner lip removed. as well as the long inner lip that runs from top to lower inner lip.
the white mark shows the spot i have to move the inner wall back another inch.(for tire side wall to clear)
picking up a BFH after work.. my 28oz mac tools ballpeen.. was not enof..
more to come this week!

i did one better and removed the lip. and now i can Move the inner Fender anyplace I like
Will make a few small pieces of sheet steel and weld it in.. Pics soon.
it's going to Fit now for sure..WOOHOO!
the yellow in this pic shows the Cut. this lip sits 1 &1/4 inch above the rest of the inner fender.
the wall in back of the lip holding it up. is also removed. now the inner lip can be moved back inline with the rest of the inner fender. a new piece. will be made from sheet steel and welded into place. and made to look nice

Re: doing the 6.5 back space. on My 3rd gen. weld rts wheels
well got one side done (cut to fit tire) with 1 full inch all the way around
lots of room for tire to move..if i feel the need to do a bit of drifting.
now ill cut the steel plates, fit them, and tack them into place,
to make it look factry... (yes it will)
as you can see in this shot. all that tire is under the fender!!
the only thing sticking out is the side wall.
NO SMALLISH LOOKING 275/60/15 ON THIS CAMARO! AND SAY GOOD BY TO THE 28X12.5 15 ET STREETS!
this is all sidewall below..
will be doing the other side. and installing the adjsbl panrod. to make sure things are even.
then the WT jacks in the rear to even things up (dropping it down a bit) had them send springs that would set the car at stock Ht. with the Wt Jacks. then i can drop it down a bit. (1 inch)
the side walls are over 13"inchs across. and with my 92 ground FX. i could only go 29.5 inch tall.
thats still more tire then my 28x12.5x15 ET streets. and alot better looking!

Re: doing the 6.5 back space. on My 3rd gen. weld rts wheels
the plates ill be welding back in will be made of the same thicknes of sheet steel.as removed with just 2 bead rolles to match the bumpstop plate i removed.
it will have a lip going inward,on the bottom.. and the rubber bumpstop will be on the axle tube.
if i removed the Ground FX. i could go 315/60/15 or 295/65/15.. but, i love the look of the 1992 Z28. so the ground FXs stay, and i just run a 29.5 x 12.5 15.(only 1/2" smaller) and in a few years im back halfing the Car.

what do you think about not running the bump stop
#13
Re: doing the 6.5 back space. on My 3rd gen. weld rts wheels
the bump stops are in place to do 2 things.
1. stop the rear end from coming up and slamming the underside of the car when hitting a anti tank pot hole.
2. when hitting the bottomless pot hole. the bump stop keeps things from getting loud. under the car,AKA steel hitting steel.
GM did this to make things only go THUD! and not Bang!
yes you can run without them.
Just make a note of what your new bumpstops are going to be.

I need the bump stops, because I tow trailers. This, at times, is a lot like filling the trunk with lead BBs. Not many others really need them.

I'm a huge fan of the stock 15 wheels, but the more I build these wheels on Weld's website, the more I like them.

why Las Vegas is My home town! (Henderson NV) anyway.
been up in WA state for the last 23 years
hate the snow now..and the rain!
back in my High school days we would cruse Fremont street, it was at one time a 4 lane,
then about 1985 it was 4 lanes all one way, still crused it, even then, now it's all closed in, and no cars. street racing was at the top of Spring Mt Road., and out at Silver bowl Stadm,

Cruising Fremont today street would just be stupid. It's crazy crowded and there's a ton of drunk people. We had a motorcycle rally that went through Fremont and THAT was a nightmare.

Ya. back in the 80s. fremont street was just like any other. street.
you would stop and do a big burn out. (with your line lock)
using all your gears. and the smoke would fill the street and casinos...lol
and just Hang there...it was not coverd with the crappy thing they have above it now.
they also had friday night race or watch. $5.00
that got alot of the street racing onto the track.
but when it's 2AM and guys are talking smack..ya take it to the street!
out at sivler bowl stadm. it was 4 lanes wide. no cross trafic.
and you could see for 3 miles. good track...lol

Re: doing the 6.5 back space. on My 3rd gen. weld rts wheels
ok today i started welding up the gaps.
will get pics up in the AM. did not take any today/night (forgot)
im using 18GA sheet steel $15 for a good size left over from the steel getting place..could almost do a set of tubs
trying to keep things as simple as I can. so anybody could copy this.
1.cheap 90 amp flux core welder $89 (cupon)comes with every thing to get started.
1.auto dark welding helmet (get one and never look back)$49
1. QT size spray bottle (fill with water) keep the heat down inside the car.
1. set of 2nd eyes/buddy to keep eyes on the inside of car!!!
i stuffed wet leather and alum foil between inside padding /carpet.
did short deep tacks to hold cut out fill plates, in place.
worked out Fantastic. took me about 3 hrs to do this to Keep the inside nice and neat..not even a scorch on the carpet pad.
could be done in 30 min with every thing out of the car.
the pieces of 18ga steel used are not verry big
1 bottom piece 3" by 2" shape of a L
1 middle piece 2" by 8"
1 top piece 1 3/4" by 13" long
the scrap piece i picked up for $15, would cover just about a camaro door.
so i have lots.
to lazy to take a fresh pic ill use a old one for a ref.
this shows the 3 diff plates (work with me on this one. )
Just this cut, moved in inner wheel well back a full 2 inches, so if you remove the bumpstop and do this cut. you now have a full 1" clearence to your side wall. when you have a 13" section width.
and with the weld RT-S wheels (10.275) wide 6.5 back space. fits all of the Tire foot print under the car.
LooK Ma! no gloves!! Just Meat and Bone! (do not try this at home!)
just shot the black primer over it after wiping down with cleaner. will seal it, then under coat it. a shot before i do

the pieces of 18ga steel used are not verry big

Re: doing the 6.5 back space. on My 3rd gen. weld rts wheels
the pasngr side is almost the same cuts, now on the driver side we drilled out the rivets to cut away the bumpstops from the thin inner sheet..this is somthing you dont have to do, the inner sheet is so thin. it's nothing but a dust cover, and can be Cut away, and replaced with a stronger and better looking sheet steel. im going to do that on the pasngr side.
i ground away the under coat to show the rivets, but will just cut the bump stops out. and i am going to cut and move back the inner wheel well.
this pic shows a few cuts made, removing the over hang lip.
and the inner lower lip, some try to just beat it back, the best thing would be to cut and remove it. then weld in another sheet of steel. Looks alot better in the long run.. notice No rust.. 100% rust free. not bad for a 20 year old car
this shot below shows how the wheel will/is touching the Bumpstop (6.5 back space)wheel 10.275" wide
after the cut of the Bump stop. I installed the first of 2, 1/8" thick plates, now the back of the wheel has over 2" of room.
removing of just 1 layer. on the bumpstop. is alot of work. that dose nothing for the car. in the end, you will end up cutting the thin..thin sheet out, for a better looking Job. and welding in a nice piece of sheet steel 18ga. will look alot better.
this is what we want, a larg tire on a wide rim, tucked under the car!..i call this shot The Carnage!
This is why i could only go 29 1/2" tall Tire, ground Fx. limited me to how tall a tire.
could go with a 325/50.15it's a tad bit wider tire at 11.5 wide foot print, and still the same sec width 13.0"
fits under the lip.will drag it back about 3/8" with the panrod to make it even.

Re: doing the 6.5 back space. on My 3rd gen. weld rts wheels
added a few new shots. with the pasngr side almost done.
will add a few more shots this weekend as well.
now the pasgr side i wanted to move in a bit more on the inner front well (About the 3 OCLock)
i wanted to move it in a full 2 and 1/2 inchs.
so when the 13" section width tire is on it has a full inch of side wall room.
now the side walls on this set of tires baloon outward. so i could only go so wide. but the way most tires are made today. i can get a wider tire on in the end. this set was only $200,(brand new!) so i could not passthem up. the nexed set are going to be something like 325/50/15

Re: doing/did. the 6.5 back space. on My 3rd gen. weld rts wheels
well got about 3. 1/2" moved inward, and done. just a shot to show.
what all i removed for my car. dont need bump stops in the stock spot.
i use ladder bars and have bump stops ontop of them.
this is finnished using 18ga sheet steel painted, then a light under coat
pasngr side
when all this was finnished over 8lbs of bumpstop parts and steel had been removed. added back about 3/4 lb. (note) this shot below would have come out better(like the above shot) but i was going by other info.. just cut out the bumpstops., dont try to save thatflimsy sheet crap under it! it will look better in the end..pic above
the last 2 shots above, show the new face plate installed, a full 3'+ back from factry.
(note front inner wheel well was also moved back to make room for tires)
shown in pics in post
tools needed
4" elct grinder w/ 10 pack 4" cutting disk harber fright $24
90amp flux core welder harber fright $89
auto darkning welders helmet also H/F $49
1 24X36 SHEET 18 GA steel $15
1 weekend (4 in my case) lazy

Re: Did. the 6.5 back space. on My 3rd gen. With weld rts wheels
going to add updates soon.
more pics.. and diff tires MT Drag radial 325/50/15 (1.25 inch wider.1' shorter 28.5 tall)
rolling the inner fender lip also.. buying the tool for that..(east wood).
also adding QA1 Rear coil over set up. so the brand new Rear Ground control set up will be for sale (never installed)
you can no longer buy just the rear GC parts. you must buy the front and rear full set.. my set comes with rear springs. set to stock Hight. and you can lift the car up or down. springs are 10 1/2 tall. keeping the car stock looking.and feeling.

Re: Did. the 6.5 back space. on My 3rd gen. With weld rts wheels
Nice article.
I just put 29.5 M/T drag tires on my '85 with a 10" wide- 6.5" Back Spacing Weld Wheel. and it took removal of the bump stop bracket, like you showed and a little "work" with the 3-pound hammer in the inner front, like you showed.
If all tech stories were this good people would save a lot of money.
Thanks
Jok

Re: Did. the 6.5 back space. on My 3rd gen. With weld rts wheels
I put the QA1 rear coil over kit on. Fit great but I had to make some spacers to move them forward on the rear end housing as it is a S&W Race cars bolt-in replacement and the shock mounts are a bit more "under the rear-end housing". Nice setup though. ALso put their front coil-over kit in with their lower control arms. You can see the tech on that at www.ETDragrRacing.com "Project 10 The Hard Way".

Re: Did. the 6.5 back space. on My 3rd gen. With weld rts wheels
Ya know.. I dont know if hooker makes any. But yes there are makers who make 1 7/8 primary tubed headers. I go to Ebay look up used NASCAR partsyou can get everything from the boom tubes.(cheap) To the headers with primary tubes that size..for that chassis is that another question.

Re: Did. the 6.5 back space. on My 3rd gen. With weld rts wheels
you can see.. not a lot of room left. as the panrod Mt. is closing in
this is the same rim. just that all parts are now clean. chromed. and set for install..
looks closer then it is..but..some slight clean up just to make sure

Re: Did. the 6.5 back space. on My 3rd gen. With weld rts wheels
this is snowballing out of control!!
saw a bolt on 5" cowl hood (had to have it)
looking at 17" wheels for the back (71HP7105B67A)
new TCI 4speed rev pat shifter...
maybe even SS strips as a new hood needs paint....
