My wheel painting project
I don't like my wheels... it's not the style, it's the color... it's so BLAH
here's what they look like
I want to paint them black, but leave a shiny silver finish on the flat parts and the rim. I could have bought a set of wheels already black, but the silver part would have had machining ribbing, and I'm going for something with a little more pop than that
First, I bought one extra wheel to experiement on, this way I'm not disabliing my car while I work on one wheel at a time.
This wheel wasn't painted like mine, it appeared to be natural aluminum. First, I took 220 grit paper, and sanded off the machining marks. I then followed it up with 400, 800, and 1500, and finally finished with rouge applied from a dremal tool
this is the result
then I masked off the shiny parts with fine line tape, and regular old green around the rim
I went ahead and primed the whole thing to help the paint stick to the aluminum.
now I'm off to go buy some glossy black wheel paint, and apply at least a couple coats before I pull off the tape. I'm probably going to put a clear coat over the black and the silver, but I'm not sure if the clear will stick to the silver or not. I may have o sand it off later if it winds up being a problem
More updates later

Re: My wheel painting project
two down, two to go.
It's odd, the wheels that came on the car (the ones that were painted) seem seem to be a different alloy than the one that was bare aluminum. It doesn't shine up nearly as well, and the casting marks and ribbing are not nearly as pronounced, but the alloy seem MUCH harder. I have to work twice as hard to get out ribbing half as large. Anybody ever heard of this?

Re: My wheel painting project
I got 2 out of my 4 done before a set of 91/92 rims basically fell into my lap, so I have to start all over again.
Little tip though, when you have the wheels balanced, put tape weights on the inside or static balance them, keeps the weights from scratching up your rim.

Re: My wheel painting project
Its a aluminium flake grey colour and with the flash of my camera they look completely painted but I only did inside the spokes and the single line stripes. This is what they look like on the car. Sorry about the pics as they are the only two i got that really show the rims. Didnt get to drive the car much this year so I didnt get really any nice pics

actually not the best stuff to use... you should start with the white stuf, then move to the green.. red rouge is used mainly for fine jewlery, but it was what I had here
