Need help in choosing new tires
I've done some searching and seen a lot of mixed opinions on tires and was looking for some more input. I just bought an 89 iroc, and it has firestone firehawks on it, the backs are completely shot and the fronts are almost done but still good for now, im putting them in the back for now and getting new fronts. Size is 245/50/zr16. Tires need to be under 120 bucks, no firestones. I've been looking at yokohoma es100 (though im iffy about buying a japanese tire), and BFG g-fore sports (always liked bfg), fuzionzr1s (I know nothing about these). I like the directional >>> tread designs, what can you guys recommend/comment about these tires and feel free to suggest any other options.

Mine has BFG comp T/A's on the back and goodyear eagles on the front of it. Both are 245/50/16. I personally like the goodyear directionals for these cars.

Re: Need help in choosing new tires
Must be roasting those backs then, I have had three sets of firehawks ss10,ss20 and now indy 500 on both my truck 275/60r15 and 91 rs 245/50r16 and have exceptional wear from all but yoko's are damn good tires now bfg's tend to be to soft especially if you like to burn a little rubber. If price isn't to much an issue look at michelin pilot's, Good luck on your choice.

I have BFG KDWS 245/50/zr16's on my Z28 and i really like them. They were about $100/tire IIRC from discount tire direct. I'd definately recommend them.

firestone makes some pretty good tires...as long as u get the ones that are Birdgestones just with firestones name slapped on them, for example Firehawk Wide Oval tires. why dont u want firestones

I have them also but in a 275/40R17. I sell tires & chose these because they have a high treadwear rating. if you are looking to save money then the gforce sports are the way to go.

Re: Need help in choosing new tires
I recently had to replace the bald BFG's on my 88 Iroc. I went with Fulda's front and rear, 245/50ZR16's. Fully directional, and have an aggressive look. Great tires IMO. Paid about 105 apiece if I remember correctly. I'm including a picture to show the fully directional tread. Oh and for those who didn't know, Fulda is a German tire company owned by Goodyear.

Re: Need help in choosing new tires
I had considered the Yokos for my Corvette until I did a little homework. A lot of guys complained that they were noisy. My cousin has a set on his Mustang, and he also said that they were noisy... so bad that he won't buy them again. He said they were so noisy once they started to wear that he thought he had a wheel bearing going bad. I went with a set of Falken Zeix instead. Tire grip was very good, but the wear was terrible. All 4 tires wore very oddly, unlike the tires prior which wore very evenly. I replaced the Falkens (after only 10k miles) with BFG G-Force Sports. I'm very happy with the tires. They grip as well as the Falkens, but seem to be showing much more consistant tire wear across the 4 tires. I'll likely buy these again for the Corvette when the current set wears out.
My IROC is about to need tires, but for that I'm looking at the Nitto 555s. I figured this way I can put a set of drag radials on the back and still have a good match for the front.

Jim85IROC,
you can get a set of drag radials in our size but for some odd reason they make the nitto nt555 in 245/50/16 that i saw on their website cause i was going to put them all the way around. as for the yoko avs es100 they are the loudest tire that yokohama makes. but if you know anything about tires which by that i mean what to look for on the inside. they are built really nice. dont take it as im saying you dont know. i guy who worked for yoko told me if you drive these tires really hard all the time and autocross type stuff it will make noise but it takes alot. i am actually putting the es100's on today. i will let everyone know how i like them.

Re: Need help in choosing new tires
I don't care how nice they are, if they make my car sound like a paddle boat, I'm not going to like them. There are plenty of other tires out there that are just as well built that don't make noise. 99% of your dry traction comes from the rubber compound used and from the sidewall construction. There are plenty of other tires out there with the same rubber compounds and similar side wall construction. There's no need to buy a tire that uses a tread design that makes noise.

Re: Need help in choosing new tires
Goodyear F1 GS-D3 tires are a good choice. Hardly any road noise, stick well to the pavement, made my car handle a lot better when combined with other suspension components. Pricey, but top notch and made in America.
