Is it hard to change the egr valve?

I looked thru the haynes manual because the chiltons has been missing for some time.... And that haynes sucks like drew said, it basically tells you to take it off and then reverse the take off. Anyways the mechanics say mine is bad and they wanted to charge me 600 dollars to fix it! Then when I picked up my car they left a rag under the hood and some gauge connected to the front of the distributor. I'll take a pic and show you guys, but anyway, is changing the egr hard? It looks pretty damn simple but do you guys have any precautions before I attempt this and break something? Thanks guys!

And this is the gauge that was left in my car. Anyone know what's it's for? It's attached to the back of the plenum(?) or whatever that thing where the fuel injectors are, I hear too many different things about what it's called. It screws in I believe. Any help is appreciated!!

Unless you want to replace your heater control vale don't look at that picture, if you can't replace you egr vale in fifteen minutes by removing the three screws and the wires on top, you should'nt be working on your car, p.s. the gasket is reusable. Your egr valve is on top by your coil and looks like three triangles, it is so easy to replace, you took a picture of your heater control valve, unless there is coolant pouring out of it don't replaceit, the gauge lookes like a vacume gauge is it measured in Hg(mercury) if it is it is a vacume gauge.:hail:

Do you have a 3.1 liter? I heard that they aren't the same as the 2.8 because it's a digital egr and you should leave it to the pros. Thanks for informing me of that though! I know exactly what you're talking about!

What do you mean leave it to the pros, unplug it, take three screws out, put the new one in, and plug it back in, it does not get any simpler than that, I know that is a heater control valve beacuse mine cracked on me leaked antifreez, and I had to repalce it so i know that picture is not an EGR valve.

My haynes manual says this : "All 1990 and later models with a 3.1 liter V6 engine are equipped with a digital EGR valve, which controls EGR flow electronically (through the ECM), rather than directly by intake manifold vacuum. This procedure does not apply to the digital EGR valve. The Digital EGR system should be diagnosed and repaired by a dealer or other properly equipped repair shop." Now is this book full of crap? I hope it is because I don't want to pay 600 dollars to get it fixed. Has anyone with a 3.1 liter replaced the EGR themselves? Thanks guys for your help!!

I think they have a deal with the auto repairers. You can change it.

However, the digital EGR costs a ton more than the normal EGR.

When I replaced my EGR, I got one from Pep Boys- it was a universal piece... vacuum input pointing the wrong way, mounted on a funky looking plate, and it wasn't even painted. Screw that! I would've had to cut my vacuum line and run hose to the thing. I returned it, paid $60 for a GM one that fit like a charm- and was painted gloss black, too!

TIP- After removing the EGR from the exhaust manifold, put silver anti-sieze on the EGR-to-manifold bolts. This way, if you ever have to pull the EGR (or manifold) again, the bolts won't be rusted up in there.

I anti-sieze everything I take apart now.

bingo

Yes that is the egr valve, Its not that hard to remove. The only problem I had was one bolt was broken so I just went to a boneyard found a decent looking valve cleaned it replaced the old gaskets with new gm gaskets installed no more trouble code 32.

It's completely safe just be careful and don't break the bolts and try install the same way you took it out, the electronic egr is expensive to replacce.

I replaced mine about a year ago. (yes the 3.1 digital EGR). If your going to buy it brand new expect to pay about $200.00 for it. You can all ways find a scrap yard that will pull and test one for you. They cost about $100.00 or go the other route. Pull one your self and save a whole lot of cash! But you will be tacking a chance that it wont work.

One other word of advice, becarfull with the wires they are probolly old and brittle. Just try not to bend them a whole lot and you will be ok.
