What is wrong with my air conditioning. Compressor doesn't engage.

Last summer when I set the controls to air conditioning, either norm or max, the compressor would cycle, just no blow cold air. Turn on for a half second/second and then shut off

Ok, no prob I'll get it converted and recharged.

Well then I washed the engine off a little bit. Covered the distrib and alt, sprayed the motor down with some water to clean off the detergent, and now the AC compressor doesn't even cycle any more... I figured something just got wet, but even now it still doesn't work. The belt was taken off for about a week, but then I put it back on.

So did I fry the compressor, do I need a new sensor somewhere or does it just need to be recharged? I heard something that the coolant is also the lubrication and that if it doesn't sense enough coolant the compressor won't cycle...

So what's the deal? Spring is coming and all the little stuff is being taken care of for the summer soon.

If you have a charge and the clutch is not fried it should come on. Oh and if your Hi/Low switch is good too....

What is the hi/lo switch?

Do you mean on the internal controls? If so yes the blower changes speed when I have it on any of the options (air, vent, heat) just no cold air then the AC is on and no compressor cycle when the AC is on...

What do you mean clutch? On the compressor? The compressor being the thing that turns with the belts?

The clutch he is referring to is the device that engages the pulley to turn the compressor. THere is a connector with some wires on the top of the compressor right behind the pulley, this is where it gets power.
The switch he is referring to is located on the reciever/dryer, the silver cylinder shaped thing on the left hand side of the engine compartment. Turn on the ac in the car with it running, unplug the connector that is on the dryer or located on the metal tube going into it. Use a short piece of wire and jump between the female prongs in the plug you disconnected. If the AC compressor kicks in, the problem is a lack of freon. The thing you disconnected and jumpered is callled the low pressure switch, and keeps the compressor from engaging if the charge is low to keep it from damage. You won't hurt it giving it a little on-off blip to test it however.

Hope this helps!

It may cost a bit of money if you don't "know someone" but as long as you have to get it working again having it converted to R134a refrigerant is in order.

Anyone on the board have this done? Maybe search some other borads, tech articles?

Great!

Need to do that to get the air working in ours.
