2.8/3.1/3/4...same block?????
i have a buddy who just got a 3.4 4th gen and i was wondering if it was derived from teh same block as the 2.8 adn 3.1? do the heads and intakes interchange? throttle bodies? if the heads can be swapped, what cc are the 2.8 and 3.1 heads? do 2.8 and 3.1 heads have enough material to port out really good? what about the intakes?
i don't mean to sound too dumb, i am just a V8 guy trying to understand
thanks guys

Hey, ya know, I was going to try and make it to last year's nationals, but I was replacing my fuel pump- what a shame, eh?
The 85-up 2.8 & 3.1 heads are the same. (82-84 2.8 heads had smaller ports). I think I remember KED85 saying the 3.4 heads have larger ports than the 2.8/3.1 heads.
Check out http://www.camaroz28.com for a 4th-gen 3.4/3.8 group. I used to be at v6fbody.org with a bunch of them, and they know their fourth gen v6's as well as we know our 3rd gen v6's!

HOW'S BARNEY FIFE DOING IN THE EWING TOWNSHIP POLICE THESE DAYS!
I met him back in 1977.
I love those cops
Let's make it real easy.
$6 go to ANY GM Parts Counter & buy the GM Performance Parts Book.
This will answer all your questions.
NOW
Can a 283 Chevy Small Block be made into a 400 Chevy Small block?
What we are saying is that they are the same engine family (the 2.8-3.1-3.4) all 60* engines.
BUT you can only go 3.2 on a 2.8 block. Even a 3.1 CANNOT be MADE INTO a 3.4
There isn't enough meat in the block.
The 3.4 is the one that is the best of the best.
The heads of all the 60* are the same (OF THE MPFI ENGINES ONLY).
The 3.4 heads have better springs to rev higher due to the better 3.4 cam design.
You cannot make 2.8/3.1 heads into 3.4 heads, as the base of the spring is very close to the water passage. Cut down to much for the larger 3.4 springs & worthless head.
Best is to get a running low milage 3.4 engine & have fun.
Really, get the GM Book & also find out why we cannot use the FWD heads!
Hope this clears up some details for ya.
Buy that book it's great reading!
Wave to Barney for me!

most of the cops are pretty chill any more. they get paid too much to be too riled up about anything. besides, with 3 7/11's, 2 dunkin donuts, 1 24hour diner, 6 fast food places, and an IHOP, there are not a whoel lot of them aroudn to see what we aree really up to most of the time
thanks for the help guys.
