2.8 to 2.8 Swap Help

I'm looking to replace the 2.8 that was in my 88' V6 camaro but am having trouble actually sourcing a motor. Other than other third gen camaros/firebirds, what else could I get the same motor from? I know the S10 2.8's were built for torque rather than power so it'd probably cause some problems....right? In all honesty I'm fairly new to mechanics and am just looking for some help!

Re: 2.8 to 2.8 Swap Help

S10 2.8 had no more tq than the f-bod 2.8. Carb'd versions were probably the same long block. Either way, it would work fine.

Oh, ok. I had originally figured that to be the case until a lady at a junkyard lectured me about all of the differences between the two but I honestly couldn't say whether she was right or not. Thanks!

Re: 2.8 to 2.8 Swap Help

Also, I had read in some other threads that for the 2.8's, I'd want to stick to a 87-92 motor because those were all externally balanced, while the 82-86's were internally balanced which with my car being an 88' would cause some problems, right?

Re: 2.8 to 2.8 Swap Help

The only item I can throw into this mix is the flex-plate/flywheel bolt pattern. Didn't it change in '85 or so? Do check this as I may be wrong, but better safe then sorry.

Re: 2.8 to 2.8 Swap Help

I think the truck / S-10 2.8s had a slightly different cam so the power band is more in the lower RPM or something. .but I doubt you'd feel much difference with the RAW POWER of any 2.8....

Re: 2.8 to 2.8 Swap Help

2.8's have no tq....2.8's have no power. According to Wiki, the truck and the car both had 125 hp on early/carb'd engines, Late (OP's car) should have been 135 horse, IIRC. They'll "git the car on down the road", and that's about it. ....And that's all they need to do.
