finally on the road again

My Camaro had been parked for about 8 years. I finally have it legal to drive again so now I'm trying to work out all of the bugs. I blew up my good motor before I parked it and dropped a junkyard 3.4 in afterwards. So, I know basically nothing about this motor but it seems to run pretty well. Ive now changed the spark plugs, wires, and cap and rotor. Car has a newer battery (a few months old now) in it and put a good charge on it last week. I also took off the stock 15" wheels and put on a set of 17/18 corvette wheels. I'm not sure how long ill leave those on but that's what's on it for now. I have a wonder bar coming and an adjustable heim joint panhard bar. So, I'm excited to drive it again and excited to get some new goodies!

Now, Sunday, I went for a drive... when cold it ran a little rough but I figure I probably will need to do a little tuning on the ecm. Seemed to run pretty well once warm. Then suddenly, pulling up to a stop sign, the engine died. Restarted then died again. Managed to get it home, ran ok while I was on the throttle but wanted to die when I let off. Check engine light came on and showed a code 42. Any thoughts? Maybe oil pressure switch?

Re: finally on the road again

What all did it take to get it running, after sitting so long?

Re: finally on the road again

Code 42 is the bypass circuit fault for the ignition control module.

Either the wire is broken or disconnected between the the ECM and the ICM, or the ICM has failed or more remotely the ECM has a problem.

If you use a DMM and back probe the tan/black wire at the ICM while the engine is running you should read 5V there, if you do replace the ICM. If you don't check the wiring between the ECM and the ICM for breaks or that the test connector is not simply unplugged. If that checks out check for 5V on this wire coming out of the ECM, if there is not replace the ECM, if there is 5V at the ECM but not at the ICM and you can't find a break, you will need to dig deeper.

Re: finally on the road again

To get it going because of sitting, I replaced the battery and the tires were dry rotted so I went ahead and put the Vetter wheels and tires on. I bought new stainless braided brake lines since I don't want to risk blowing out a line. Shocks struts and bushings need replaced but they were pretty well wore out before I parked the car anyway. I plan to flush the brake fluid when I do the braided lines also.
Six_shooter, thanks! I'll look into that.
