Re: Another Turbo 2.8 in progress
Quick question, I know when you power up the MS, before cranking, the outside 2 LEDs are lit, then normally when the car is started, just the LED by the connector is lit. Now all of a sudden after cranking, the middle LED lights along with the one by the connector. What is the middle LED for in my setup? Warmup indication? Its not on when the laptop is connected.

I haven't really taken it out, but it's still a little rough starting while hot or cold. First start stalls out unless I give it some gas.

I will update either tomorrow night or Tuesday morning on how it does, and post up another datalog. I'm going to spend the day at my girls house. Thank you for the continued help!

on the hot start issue are u having to give it throttle or is it just cranking very slow ?

Re: Another Turbo 2.8 in progress
dont use williebase2 use this one instead
i added some cold start after enrichment
took away soe hot start cranking fuel
added a 6,500 rpm hard rpm limiter , soft limit when it activates is 6,300
i disabled the traction control system for now
i disabled the additive, retractive timing controls ( adds or removes timing based on coolant and air temps ) ill enable this later
made some other minor changes
edit i also fixed the Celsius versus Fahrenheit error

Re: Another Turbo 2.8 in progress
I'm about to go out and rerun the power wire for the MS away from the dizzy and coil. The turbo setup is supposed to be delivered today, but the tracking number says that it was never recieved at the sort facility in CO. Only says dispatched to sort facility on the 13th. I find it hard to believe that the usps "misplaced" a 40+ pound sizeable package....
Waiting to hear back from usps as I have initiated an investigation. This is in no part the fault of bl85c, he shipped the package and usps dropped the ball.
Hoping it's one of those rare instances that it's not scanned until it's delivered, although I have had many packages sent via usps, they have always been scanned regularly, yet this package has been in route to the sort facility since the 13th.

Re: Another Turbo 2.8 in progress
its undriveable lean. when I give it gas, it maxes out the AFR gauge to ---. no power whatsoever. Its like it wants to stop when I give it gas.
The idle is good though, I almost dont have to give it gas to start it, just a little and it starts right up, When I try to drive it, different story.

Re: Another Turbo 2.8 in progress
I have to recalibrate the TPS again cause I had to screw with the idle, When I started it it dropped to around 6-700 rpms and stalled after I calibrated the tps.

The beginning is 1/4 pedal to 1/2 pedal, towards the end is 3/4 pedal.
Much better lol, heres the log
Oh and it started without me having to touch the pedal

Re: Another Turbo 2.8 in progress
its real close , afrs at 3/4 throttle are just a touch lean .
i only saw 2 glitches in the log much less then before, ill keep pan eye on the glitches in the logs , for now its ok
go out and drive the car , give me some nice datalogs, what i want u to do is manually shift so u can hold each gear longer then normal so u can hit each section of the fuel map.
u dont have to make it shift at redline but let the engine rev up a lil bit
do some at light throttle , then some more, then mid throttle etc , dont go wot yet u can if u want but watch the afr gauge if its over 13.5 @ wot back off for now
ae needs a lil more tweaking its a touch rich in the upper low range , and lower mid range taking away .2 msec out of those cells should clear it up

hows it feel power wise compared to the stock ecm?
i still have very limited timing in it and afrs arent dead on yet so it will pick up a bunch

Re: Another Turbo 2.8 in progress
Butt dyno says at least 20 more horse, but thats debatable. It definitely is faster, especially 1/4 and 1/2 pedal. and that was with the first tune. This current one feels about the same as the first tune, maybe a little more power, but I cant be certain
However, that could be because I havent driven it in a little bit, lol. And the exhaust is LOUD. Pretty much a 1 foot straight pipe with a muffler and about 6 inches of pipe after that. What can I say, it sounds better than a full exhaust system, lol. Ill post a starting video soon.

Miraculously the package is out for delivery, with no scans from CO, all the way to my post office in FL. Hmm, either they contracted it out to fedex/ups, or they just never scanned it until now. At least I know Im getting it today
Ill post up pics when I get it, Feels like Christmas all over again

Re: Another Turbo 2.8 in progress
WOOT WOOT! Got the turbo setup! In the next couple days/weeks I need to start accumulating parts(gaskets, misc hardware, couplers for the intercooler, etc...), And start planning for the scoop for the intercooler in the hood.
Heres a pic of the setup, and a little teaser pic of something I picked up from an Air Force supply site, I think its a nice little touch
Getting closer and closer!

Ill grab another one in a little bit. Still cuts out a little bit in first, but its not a lean cutout, maybe a spark cut out? Key on not started i get both ignition LEDs on, after starting there is only the ignition led by the connector on if that means anything. Other than that she runs much better now. Had a couple spots where it leans out to around 17 ish but i let off to let it richen up.

Re: Another Turbo 2.8 in progress
something i should mention is i need datalogs after the warmup enrichment is finished , the entire first half of that datalog it was in warmup mode
i was able to tune out those lean spots though
i only saw 2-3 glitches in the whole log , but megalog viewer dont show me the amount of resets
do u have an aftermarket coil on the car by anychance , may have to ground the other end of the shielding on the ignition wire to the distributor
and yes both outer lights will be on with key on engine off , and u will only see the one nearest the connector lit when engine is on

something i should mention is i need datalogs after the warmup enrichment is finished , the entire first half of that datalog it was in warmup mode
i was able to tune out those lean spots though
i only saw 2-3 glitches in the whole log , but megalog viewer dont show me the amount of resets
do u have an aftermarket coil on the car by anychance , may have to ground the other end of the shielding on the ignition wire to the distributor
and yes both outer lights will be on with key on engine off , and u will only see the one nearest the connector lit when engine is on

Ill have to go down to mcdonalds to download it, im at my friends house. But after that it should be warmed up and ill take it on the highway for the next datalog if thats good. I still dont have the tcc connected yet, still trying to decide how I want to do the lockup. A couple pages back there is a post with a link to a couple options for tcc wireup.at the least id like to have lockup in 3rd and 4th, with power routed through the brake switch to unlock under braking

Could it be that as far as I know its the original coil? I bought the car in 09, but I dont know if it was replaced before then. It does still have the egr solenoid bracket on it. It reset something like 13 times when i was datalogging it. Im on the mobile app, did you upload another tune?

yeah new tune uploaded , i added a lil bit of fuel in those lean spots , hopefully not to much as those 36.6 injectors seem to be touchy lol
dont worrk about lockup switch right away , ive been driving my v6 car without a lockup ever since i put the turbo on it never hurt the trans even witht he really high stall converter
btw u can have ms control the converter lockup

not the longest datalog, should all be after warmup.
All highway, up to about 112-114mph, 3/4 pedal.
Ill grab another good one in a little while.

Re: Another Turbo 2.8 in progress
lol talk about beating it like a red headed step child , about 17 seconds 0-114
it will pull harder in 3rd gear once i add more timing in , but i know that timing map is safe for the turbo so im not going to mess with it for now
afrs are okish across the board .5 lean in a few spots @ wot , and a lil rich in a few spots while cruising
ae enrichments are still a bit to rich , u can see when u open the thottle the afr takes a huge dive then comes back up , leaning them out a some will help the motor have a better throttle responce
edit
btw if that wa sinfact only 3/4 throttle u need to calibarte the tps for wot , as it was showing 96% tps

Btw its a turbo off of an 84 mercedes diesel 300D. Trim could be .45 or .55, not 100% sure. TAO314. Its a 3.0l, so pretty close to my displacement. Did a little research last night on it.

I looked up the comp map of that turbo and I will bet you will be upgrading soon as you get addicted to boost because that turbo will run out of steam fast if you plan on going fast. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Another Turbo 2.8 in progress
Well i never went to the floor so it coulda been closer to WOT then I thought. Tps is off again though cause im trying to nail down the idle. It seems to travel a little bit. I did forget to recalibrate it again, lol so its probably a little off.

that thing seems like a pretty small turbo , i cant find the compressor wheel specs though , the idle will change a lil bit as i or u tune it , so unless the idle goes realy high or low between new tunes id just leave it alone
down the road pick one of theese up

I know i will probably go bigger at some point, but I wanted to start small so I can learn as much as I can out of the experience. I think it will be ok for a daily driver for now, which is what I was aiming for to start. I will probably stick with it for awhile until I go the hybrid route.
I have already learned alot from this thread and numerous others, and from a bunch of members either involved with this thread or helping out.

Re: Another Turbo 2.8 in progress
No joke, I had the same turbo on my 2.8, took it to 15psi and decided that wasn't enough so I put the n2o on it again and ended blowing it up haha. The response was really nice though, not laggy like larger stuff.

Re: Another Turbo 2.8 in progress
15 psi is probably about where this turbo will become inefficient, even with the IC correct?

Re: Another Turbo 2.8 in progress
I was also tossing around ideas for the intercooler, and being its a smaller one Id like to go as efficient as possible, So I will be doing a top mount setup for the IC, Located to the right and behind the rad, on a 45ish degree angle. That way the output of the IC is a straight shot to the TB. A couple 90* elbows, and a 45* aluminum pipe should be all I need for IC tubing.
Looking through some google images of TMICs, it seems that in order to spread the airflow evenly across the IC, I will have to do a couple horizontal splitters in the scoop. If I dont, the majority of the airflow will be pushed towards the top of the IC, limiting the cooling effect.
It'll be a recessed scoop, nothing too crazy. I have a welder and am learning to weld, so the hood scoop should be pretty easy to start with.
So heres what I will need for the setup as of right now,
Misc bolts for the turbo headers
Misc couplings for the IC
Thick compressible header gaskets
Heat blanket and header wrap
Oil lines and a bung for the pan
Misc tbolt clamps
All of which should run me right around $200 or so

Re: Another Turbo 2.8 in progress
do urself a favor do not do a top mount intercooler
get one of theese and stick it in the nose this will fit right in with tons of room to spare
http://www.ebay.com/itm/FULL-ALUMINUM-18-x12-x3-BAR-PLATE-RACING-FMIC-FRONT-MOUNT-TURBO-INTERCOOLER-/290933298881?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43bcf9d6c1&vxp=mtr
or u can buy a full kit like this

or u can get the big boy intercooler
http://www.ebay.com/itm/S13-S14-S15-180SX-CA18-SILVIA-R32-33-34-35-Intercooler-31-x-12-x-3-delta-fin-3-/390745010254?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A2004%7CSubmodel%3AX&hash=item5afa37b04e&vxp=mtr
get one with 3 inch in and outlets
edit actually the last one is not the big boy one , the big boy one is the 32x14x4 , which is what im running on my iroc

Re: Another Turbo 2.8 in progress
The current ic I have is 9 1/2w by 7 1/2 tall by 2 3/4 thick. I'm set on the intercooler and for now I want to do as little tubing as possible for efficiency. I'm very limited on funds now so I'm working with what I have. When I go bigger with the turbo, I'll go bigger with the ic.
I completely understand that a fmic will be better, but like I said, I'm working with what I have. I literally have like a $300 budget left for everything, and I'm already like $1100 or $1200 total as of right now. It's gonna be tight, but I picked cheap and reliable, lol, fast wasn't part of the equation. Plus I may wind up having to wait till next month to pick up the rest of the stuff I need cause my dad just bought a garage for the pontoon boat, lol.
