just another sucker for the 6 shooter.

The purpose of this thread is practicality. turbo posts please.

No turbo posts please,
I have neither time nor money for a turbo or a swap.

I have nearly 200,000 miles on my 3.1 and ifters are knocking,
So-

What im looking for is a list of valve train components (Part #s etc.)and general performance engine parts that work well with the 3.1 without any modification of the block.
I need to keep stock fuel delivery, intake etc.
other than that, I can get the ecm tuned for anything else.

Thanks for the help.

Re: just another sucker for the 6 shooter.

260 or 272 cam with valve springs and retianers/locks to match

cam will depend on what else u plan on doing

cam lifters will be 105$'s
springs locks and retianers will be another 100
get urself a couple carbide die grinder bits and port the heads
gasket match the intake and do a lil cleanup on the lower intake were the injector bosses protrude intot he runner
also pick up a new timing chain set

reasemble get a chip burned to take advantage of mods and enjoy

Also, I dont plam on any extreme numbers so an overly beefy bottom isnt needed, I just mainly want more midrange grunt. Its plenty fast enough, I look fast amd sound fast. Thats about it lol.

Re: just another sucker for the 6 shooter.

call up deltacams and just ask for a 260 grind cam, it iwll give u the midrange ur looking for and extend the top end

id have to look up the part numbers on the vlave springs and locks/retianers. its been so long since ive had to order any lol, i used to know the part numbers off the top of my head

for some reason comp-916-12 sticks out in my head for the valve springs

Re: just another sucker for the 6 shooter.

Same as what Project89 said. 260 or 272 Grind cam from deltacams. Some 1.6 roller tip rockers, port and polish the heads yourself, some headers. It all matters what your total budget is. And being that your have a 3.1L thats speed density, emc tuning would be best to get the best power out of the mods you add and to make the car run good.

Have you ever looked at the tuning aspet? Chip burnign or what not? If not do some searching and read some info, as its a good thing to do to the car.

I added a delta 260grind cam, ported/polished the heads and saw a good difference, much more responcive. Not the best video but heres on when I just tuned the idle and part throttle, no WOT tuning. 3.1L Automatic 1991 camaro.
0-60

Its idle after cam break in
Sorta lopey which sounds nice but I was also no tuned at the time

Re: just another sucker for the 6 shooter.

the 272 cam is to much for his goals , the 272 is a upper midrange / high rpm cam

the 260 will give him that midrange power hes looking for with a nice boost in the top end

Thanks for the feedback so far guys, I really appreciate it.
So does this deltacams require your core or do they grind you a new cam?

as long as they have a core in stock they will just grind u a new cam, if they dont have a core u have to ship them yours.

i dont recall anyone here ever having to send them in a core though.

and i know of atleast 8 cams purchased from them, i myself have bought 4

Agree, I didnt send my core and the reason they said was becasue of how far I lived away. So they didnt tack on a core charge, just the 20 dollar shipping. It was 130 bucks shipped to my door with the lifters.

Youll be fine to drive it there, i did the cam and the heads and it was ok for a drive down the road, just rich at idle.

Thats a dirt cheep dyno tune, keep us up to date.

Im guessing 115-120 Hp at the wheels with a nice tune and just the cam for a add on, but thats good, definitly noticable. Stock is what 100Hp dave?? I know project89 had a dyno of a stock 3.1L firebird IIRC.

Port those heads while your in there and your good to go(more Hp), porting is free minus the bits.

the place im going to lets you do the pulls, they work all the computer equipment. The shop is like the ONLY race shop for about 100 miles around- they build pretty top notch stuff to. The guy I talked to was very friendly to- apparently he had a v6 camaro (91 I believe,) that pulled late 12s early 13s off the quarter.

Re: just another sucker for the 6 shooter.

minigunz i know u said nop turbo posts , but fastedi just removed his original under k setup. send him a pm and see if he will sell it to u.

turbo = 118 bucks
wastegate = 40-60
cheap intercooler is about 50
i know were u can get a set of 28pound injectors for 15 bucks

+ some misc couplers and tubing about 50 bucks

and u could have a running turbo car, fastedi might even be able to supply u with a tune .

all in all it would prolly cost the same as what u had planned anyway

figure about 400$ investment

My what? My STOCKER L98? Hmmmm....interesting. Jk. I posted that to show my friend the reactions of you V6 guys when someone insults your engine. I didn't think about coming off as an ignorant *** hole. I know there are more built sixes on here than the eights. And they can run 11's and 12's as well. So my bad.

You might think twice about doing something like that now, due to getting infractions for doing such.

That's what happens, when you make posts like that.

Axle/Gears: 3.23 limited slip
Re: just another sucker for the 6 shooter.

It's woth sqeezing everything you can out of your naturaly breathing engine anyways before you start force feeding it anyway IMO. Plus I'd rather learn tuning on a cammed/ported engine first before I went to tuning a boosted engine.
Keep us up to date on what parts you buy and how the project goes!
