belt tensioner

So my car goes through belt tensioners like crazy. I've replaced mine 4 times now in the past two years. Could one of my pullies be out of line or something???

Re: belt tensioner

Possibly, but usually that would be caused by a pulley having some play in it, in which case thats generally the pulley that goes out, but not all aftermarket parts are created equal either, ACdelco is almost always the best bet for replacement parts, since they make half the parts that our cars came from the factory with.
Also, maybe your belt is not correct, or worn?

Re: belt tensioner

If a pulley was out of line it would most likely just wear out the belt. The tensioner pulley is smooth and runs on the flat side of the belt so an out of line pulley shouldn't affect it. How does it (they?) go out? They normally last for years. And years.

Re: belt tensioner

They make a really loud buzzing/rattling noise and sometimes a tinking noise.. I know it's the belt tensioner, because you can tell the sound is coming directly from it..and when I take the belt off, the pully strips all the way around and breaks off a little metal piece and covers over the left bolt, so I have to have someone hold the pully back with a wrench while I take the bolt out. And when I put a new one on, all the problems are fixed, until a couple months later it all repeats itself. I've had the car since June of '09, and I have the 4th one on it now.
Just thought I'd hear what y'all have to say before I replace it again..
