building a v6

hey guys, i posted this in general tech, but didnt get much help...im looking to buy a new v6 block this weekend, which im gonna build into a 3.1 to replace the 2.8 in my car now...i want the smaller engine cuz of gas mileage, and insurance and such...

just wanted to know what i should look for when i go to get it, since im getting it from a junkyard, i just want to make sure that i dont get a dud...what things should i specifically look for? i know that if theres a hole in the cylinder, thats bad...

also, i was wondering how difficult it would be to add a turbo to it, and is it possible...thanks for the help!

Hey why not just look for a 3.4 instead of a 3.1. Same transformation and everything same prices all around and more torque and HP.

Car: 85' Firebird (Project), 92' RS
Engine: 2.8L, LS1
Transmission: 700R4, 4L60E
Axle/Gears: 3.42 Open , 10 Bolt (ukn)
well the 3.4L has more displacement, and there is still no replacement for displacement, so if a turbo is on your mind, remember it will be more effective with a 3.4L than it will be on a 2.8L or even a 3.1L. The 3.1L produced something in the neighborhood of 140hp, a 2.8L produced 135, and a 3.4L produced 170hp, that'll put you easily in the range of older v8 cars. And with a turbo pushing 10psi boost you'll be just around the 290-300hp mark, good enough for 0-60 times that should be in the mid 5's!!! now getting the turbo finished will be a difficult part, but it is possible. When you go to rebuild the engine, or check it out. I'd make sure that none of the cylinders are scarping the cylinder walls, buy a rebuild kit, replace all the rings, and gap them to the same specs as factory, might as well go forged so you can run more boost than 10 lbs of boost, then you can go up to say 14 or so, and really make some ponies. Ok, that's all i have to say for now. c'ya.
