Oil Leak

Hey guys,

Well, I've developed a decent oil leak. Yesterday I notcied a good bit of oil on my driveway and decided to put it up on a jack to inspect the underside... I received a horrifying image, Oil sprayed all over the underside of my car back to the muffler and all over the pipeing. It looks like the oil is coming from were the oilpan and the transmission meet. I'm not sure if maybe it is a gasket or what. The question is... WHAT DO I DO?

Welp, it could be the Distribtor O-ring, The rear main seal, or the oil pan gasket.

You can look and see if the distributor o-ring is leaking......but the rear main seal and the pan gasket would require the removal of the tranny to see/replace.

Keep an eye on the oil level....dunno what else to tell you. If it's leaking badly you'll need it fixed soon.

If you are ready to tackle that job, it's messy, but very rewarding. You can also rebuild your distributor at the same time & get back ALOT of pep your car has lost over the years.

It could also be your valve covers. If one of them is leaking it could be running down the side of the block and onto the trans. inspection cover and the oil can also be blowing back over the undercarriage as you are driving,

I looked under the hood and everything is looking good there, no leaks at the head and it is obvious that it has been leaking while I've been driving. I havn't been getting a smell of berning oil in the car so I doubt that it has been dripping down the side of the engine and onto the tranny. The oil level went from right on the top of operating level to right in the middle almost overnight! In other words... my car is not going to be driven untill I get this fixed. I am one sad fellow.

The leak from the distributor can be verry hard see. Your first step is to find out ware the oil is comming from. Get a small flash light and go over the engine from front to back, top to bottom. Also you may want to double check your oil drain plug. It sounds kinda stupid, but the last time I had that much oil under my car thats ware the leak was comming from.
