It Finally Happened....

I need some advice....I just put a 92 Mercury Topaz on the road about a month ago and I got an emission inspection notice today. It is the first time I have ever had to do an inspection and it is to be done on a treadmill. Give me some advice on what to do to pass this thing. I am worried since they got this one that my Camaro maybe next and it needs a new exhaust system.

Run the crap out of it on your way to the test station. You want to get the converter REAL hot to pass the sniffer test. Replacing the O2 sensor before you go would be a good idea too.

BTW, why a Topaz??? Those have got to be one of the worst POS's ever!

My mom bought the car new back in '92 she didn't run it that much and decieded to sell it about that time my wife needed a car so she gave us a good deal on it. The only thing I did was put new exhaust from the converter back on it.

This is VERY SIMPLE.
Really!
Check your AIR FILTER, make sure it clean and there is NO OBSTRUCTION to in coming air flow.
Make sure your entire emissions system is intact.
Or make it look so!
Next, go get Gumout Fuel addative.
The White Bottle, Red Label, Long skinny neck stuff.
Two bottles.
Pour it in tank.
Go get Preminum Unleaded fuel. Fill up, "enough" for the smog test.
Go to the freeway and floor the car, from every traffic light, any opportunity you can. For about a day. Before you go for your smog test, drive high speed for about 1/2 hour.
You'll pass with flying colors.
This has worked, EVERY TIME in LA, since 1984, my first smog test out here. Your tread mill test, was simple!
OH, MAKE SURE, when they do the "HIGH RPM testing, THEN, the LOW RPM test, (fast driving to idle at a light) watch he DOES NOT immediatly lift his foot off the gas.
That will load your car engine up with excesive pollution fumes & you will fail.
This trick makes customers "Pay for tune-up" to pass smog at that station. CROOKS!!
WATCH THE GUY LIKE A HAWK during the test, they do this "trick" alot!!
You'll pass easy!!

Thanks Billy!

I ran the treadmill for the first time two years ago (bi-yearly inspection), here's what I did. Keep in mind I always do a yearly tuneup in the Spring; so my other tuneup parts are always relatively fresh (wires, fuel filter, timing, etc)

Brand new K-mart "e-test only" air filter

Pulled dist cap, scraped carbon tracking off

Pulled, cleaned, & checked gap on spark plugs

Cardboard over 1/2 of radiator to help it run hottest

Used "Guaranteed to Pass" (Pep Boys) in the fuel tank; when fuel tank was almost empty, I refilled, and went to take the test.

I passed; lets see if the same thing works for me this January! I hope so; the car's had much more miles on it since 2000, and now I've got the 3.73 rear...
