thud when I press the gas?

hey guys, latley I have been hearing this thudd sound coming from my right rear, it only occurs when I romp the gas, when I normally ease on the gas it makes no thud, but when I romp it you can sure as hell feel it, if feels like your running over a pot hole? hope that helps, could it be my tranny mount is loose? and if so can I tighten it up myself or would the best thing to do is get a new one, if thats the case how much would it cost me? I really do hope it's the tranny mount, any idea's guys?

Mounts are cheap.
$10-$40ish range (rubber to Poly)
Labor is cheap (an hour)
This job is the dirtiest job you'll ever do, tho.
Have LOTS of hand cleaner ready if it's the tranny mount.
PS, It probably is that one, too.

I used to have a thud when goin over bumps and finally figured out my axle bump stops were gone....that sucked cuz I already replaced my whole rear suspension trying to find it. My bet is that it's your tranny mount tho.

Sounds like wheel hop. Someone told me it was from worn rear suspension. It still happens to me.

It's sounds like you tranny mount. My car does that to and it sounds like it coming from the rear right tire. When I got under the car to check it out I found that my tranny mount was bent. OPPSS I gueess I shouldn't hit the gas that hard. SO until I change I just take it easy on the poor thing.

Monkie,

If you saw mine you would know how!

Before a long trip to the drag races I had my oil change. I didn't have time to do it so I droped it off at a local shop. Well they didn't tighten the oil drain plug enough. Needles to say all most every drop of oil left the engine and splaered under the car over the 300 mile trip. It's nasty under there!!!

Sounds like a tranny mount to me too...I had one go. Put your hand on the side of the console, gun it and see if you can feel something. I could!

That's when I'd go to one of them car wash places that has an undercarriage wash, OR, just go to the do-it-yourself one and spray the sh*t out of the bottom.

ovrclk,

I was thinking about doing that but the last time I was under the car I noticed that i had a small tear in the body right under the the back seat. I don't want water getting inside. So it'll have to wait untill I get it welded.

I gaurantee its your tranny mount. Take a jack wheel it under the car and put it under the trans pan. Then raise it up. While watching it raise look to the rear brace where the rubber trans mount is located. If you see it separate thats your problem. Just a plain rubber one is 8.99 at pepboys.

Make this job simple.
Pull over a curb, get middle of car in air.
Take a long pry scredrive out. Look at where the drive shaft enters rear of tranny. YOu'll see the cross mount. Insert screwdriver to raise tranny.
IF IT DOES RAISE, the mount is broken.
IT's 15mm bolts.
Very easy to do.
Hardest job is getting the car set up to R & R the mount.
USE JACK STANDS!!!!
UNLESS, you use a driveway to get to it.
DOn't waste time cleaning underside of the car.
Just use lots of rags & such.
IT IS SO DIRTY from all oil seepage catching on that low area under the car.
You'll see the dimples/dents from the broken mount at the CC area, as that where the CC hits the floor (the thud you hear).
PS if you DO NOT REPLACE THIS, count on an exhaust manifold breaking from twisting of engine and the stationary exhaust system. Something gives.
It's an easy, dirty job. About 40 minutes max.

Mine used to do that to me. You can fix it for about $10 in no more than 30 minutes. I'm talking about the transmission mount. It's a no-brainer! It's most likely broke.

Actually, you could just slide under the car, and try to push the tailshaft of the transmission towards the floor. If you can move the trans up at all, the trans mount is busted. (You don't need to be strong to do it, it'll pivot on the engine mounts. The torque arm also takes some of the weight of the trans.)
