3.1 V6 Camaro 56k miles...

I just bought my car a few months ago with 56k miles for $6500.

I love my car and have seen many topics with mods and other such things. There is a speedshop near were I live and they recommended the Flowmater 40 series. I was wondering the opinion of anyone who has used them. Also, are there any headers that are available for the V6?

Right now EVERYTHING is stock... were should I start to get more Horsepower to my engine without going cash crazy.

If this has been writen about in another topic refer me there.

Thanks alot guys.

Dynomax Cat back 149.99
Catco High Flow Converter 59.99

Those are nice mods that help, but if you really want to feel power;

Crane 2030 Cam 129.99
Comp Cams 1.52 Roller Tip Rockers 109.99

Not one bolt on will beat a valve train upgrade in power that you can see and feel. If I could do it over and my car had your miles I would do the cam and rockers first. The exhaust will sound nice, help, but not give you the power you need.

Buy a K&N..... Good thing to do.

I would also go for the valve train stuff first. Heads, Cam, roller rockers...

On my RS, I gutted the cat.... it was free! But I would only recommend that to someone who lives in an area with no emissions checking...

Sounds like you got a pretty nice car... I'll be looking for the pics!

Well, Actually.... I bought it at the Ford Dealer! Seems that the person that owned it used it very lightly and joined the military. Afterwards they moved around here and sold the car. The front fiberglass needs to be repainted, and the rims need to be replaced. but other then that the condition is good.

Now, Is there a website that gives more info on the Cam and Rockers? Also, must they be installed professionally or can I do it myself? My brother just bought a Mustang GT (Traitor), and my car stock sounds better than his!

Oh, how about tires? any recommendations there?

If your brother bought a GT you need to:

Crane 2030 Cam
Comp Cam Roler Tip 1.52 rockers
Port your plenum
Get a K&N Drop in
Get some 3.73 rear gears before you even try to race him.

Port your plenum

I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with the above mentioned part/mechanism.

Also, I have a 5 speed and was wondering about what I could do with the shifter (Hurst?) and gear ratios if I need to. Right now I don't want to go over $1500.

Oh, and by the way. I was pretty damn sure I wasn't going to try to race his GT... that is unless I use my father's 88 'Vette.

Oh, I want to thank you guys for helping me out. There's alot of valuable information that you guys have supplied me.

Thanks! That should help alot!

I just realized something. I was looking at another post and heard that they were getting around 19 and that was bad. Well, I am getting around 17 (city) and 19 (hwy). I just put new sparks and wires and no change. (just stock stuff no inprovements) Will these mods change the MPG as well? and should I put Splitfires or better in there?

I thank you all and want to tell you guys, I will be a diehard Fan of this forum for a long time.

OH! and by the way, my brother is putting flowmaster 40's on his Mustang because he was offeneded that my V6 sounds better! LOL!!! just wait untill I get all these mods going... I just can't wait to get going.

You know, I see people posting that they get like 25 to 29 mpg a lot and I think it's all bullcrap. Unless my car just really sucks or something I should be getting a lot better compared to what some of these people claim. I only get like 17-20 mpg. 20 if there's a lot of highway. And I think this is good. It kind of sucks though that the new LS1 camaro's and trans ams get like 19-26 mpg. And they have like 2 more cylinders and 180 more horses!! That's more than double of what my car has!

Acctualy i get between 25 and 28. Depending how hard I stomp on it. I have noticed that others get lower and say that there car is running fine. Sounds odd to me. Mabye some thing in those cars is not work just right?? I do a 170 mile round trip drive monday through friday to work. Half highway and half city (avoiding trafic at all cost!!)and plenty of cows.

I run a 92 Camaro RS 3.1L with the following mods.

Flowmaster 80 series with custom built cat back. K&N, Crane FireWire 8.5mm wires, Accel Super Coil, and a rebuilt Distributor with a Holy Anhilalator performace ignition module. I never change the oil at 3000 miles usaly 4000 - 5000. Mostly due to lack of time or just plain frogeting. So unless the mods give a good boost to MPG I have no idea what is going on.

It could be a mileage thing, too. My 220,000 mile '86 is bad on mileage around town.

I_Live_4_my_RS, a major tuneup will be the best thing for your car. (It's not just plugs & wires!) My last posting of this is here: https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/002189.html

I run Splitfires; I like 'em, they seemed to help a bit, but they won't do a miracle for you. Here's a tip; if you buy them, go through Summit Racing. Splitfire dropped the prices of all their plugs a few years ago... the "originals" sell for $3.99, and the platinums go for $5.99. LOCAL STORES DON'T DO THIS! They're still selling the originals for $5.99, and the platinums for $9.99. I even called Splitfire about it; the guy I talked to sounded mad, and said he'd do something about it, but Pep Boys & Strauss still sell 'em at the original price. (That means those stores are making a killing, and Splitfire's losing business.)

Do not get the cam and rockers. Take it from one of the few here who knows what they are talking about. I have the 2030 cam, comp cams 1.52 roller rockers, hypertech thermo, MSD 6A, custom cold air, dynomax exhaust, and jet pulleys. Before the cam I could beat my brothers 92 RS 5.0 TBI auto W/49,000 miles. After the cam I lost every time. Please dont make the mistake I did, my 92 bird has only 51500 and is auto it made me sick to spend around 2,000 bones to go slower. Please listen to me.

Ok, Everyone that has upgradee your car with the Crane 2030 cam tell me your opinion.

There is a local speedshop that sells the parts and I was thinking about getting the cam, rockers, and rear gear. I have been getting clashing reports on the flowmaster 80's... but I'm looking for improved performance and not just sound. Dynomax sounds better but does it get as much horsepower?

Oh, TomP, I was wondering what you now about the 4 pronged sparkplugs. Do they make any for the V6? (are they worth it?).

another few questions. I've heard people talking about "Clearing their computers". Or buying a new chip. Any info?

thanks again

Dynomax usually shows 1-2 more HP, as I'm sure Flowmaster does. (I have Dynomax.)

The 4-pronged... the Bosch +4's? I dunno, never tried 'em... I'm sure they make them for our engines. Plugs are mainly id'd by their threads (we have 14mm), whether or not they're resistor plugs (ours are), and their heat range.

The whole plug thing I would say save the $$ and change the stock plugs each year... I would rather have a nice coil and wires over the "HOT" plug on the market...

I can easy get 25 mpg on highway trips driving 80 mph in my '91 3.1 with 122k miles. It IS possible. (Although, I admit, it got a full tune-up this spring.)
