girl needs help with EGR valve (?) gasket

hello people. i have a 91 v6 firebird that i recently had fitted with a new transmission and exhaust system. before the transmission was put in, the rpms were running way too high blowing out a couple gaskets. i took it to a dealer and they told me it was the egr valve gaskets and that one of them was replaceable while the other they tried to fabricate without success and told me i'd have to get from a junkyard. i've exhausted all possible junkyards and in my repair manual it says that the egr valve in the 91 v6 is digital. so if its not an egr valve what the hey is it? its a rather small cylindrical part off the engine and i don't have a clue what i'm looking for. i think i'm looking for the wrong part. the cars runs a little loud and does not run as tight as it should. thanks for anyone who can help!

it should be on the passenger manifold... it bolts to the manifold and also has a little tube coming off of it going to the intake. The tube from the EGR to the intake will be brass. Soo... if i understand correctly, it was redlined and blew a gasket on the egr??! Which gasket did it blow? I was able to find all the EGR gaskets for my car at a local parts store.. it could be that they mean the EGR itself is bad.. is the service engine light on? One more thing...never trust a dealer or service guy...always do it yourself!! learned that the hard way.

2.8 is coming out and in its place a 305 t5 with a cam and rockers.. Will hopefully start as soon as my drumset (financing) is sold!

yeah, the service engine light likes to come on after driving, say, 10 miles. they should me the part and there was a big gap where they said a gasket SHOULD be. hehe. and they said the "other" gasket was bad but intact...

welcome on the board,
your EGR is digital and if the inner gasket is blown (happened to me)you need a new EGR or you finaly find one at a junkyard, if your lucky. The other part you are talking about I don't know exactly what you mean, but I'll check my haynes.

thanks for your help guys! i think i did learn the hard way not to go to the dealer because i blew 100 just for them to replace one scrawny gasket and let me find out on my own i'd have to get a new egr valve anyway! i guess i thought, being a dealer, they'd have access to that inner gasket...guess i'd rather spend the 250 on the new valve and have a friend put it in, if thats the case, then waste time looking for such a hard to find part! thanks for the help though!

I had to replace the EGR valve on my 3.1 too. The valve itself cost me $220 for an AC Delco one from PartsAmerica.com. It took about 2-1/2 minutes to install.

one thing you might want to know about these digital egr's is that they cost a pretty penny, close to $200, thought i had to buy a new one but turned out to be my EST

Damn, makes me glad I have the old-style vacuum EGR. Can the vacuum-op'd EGR be modded for use on the digital EGR'd 3.1's? I never knew a digital EGR was so much cash!

Anyone got a wiring diagram for the digital EGR? I assume the passenger side exhaust manifold didn't change thru the years, so the vacuum EGR might bolt into place of the digital unit. The vacuum-op'd EGR takes a signal from the computer to activate the EGR, and sends a signal back from the vacuum diagnostic switch. Does the digital EGR use the same type of wires?
