bah...i'm gonna ditch the flowmaster

i'm tired of it. it's too loud...especially when i have to go uphill. my car will be screaming and i'm going like 20 mph. there are times when it sounds badass but the interior resonance is a lil' annoying. anybody know how much a stock muffler costs???? my guess would be $30....

hey forget the stock muffler, just get a dynomax super turbo, I think they run about 50 bucks. They real quiet, but they have a slight rumble to them and they flow real well.

Cheat,
Go to the yards and pic one up.
Sounds like you have a two chamber Flowmaster.
That's what I have on my S-10 Blazer.
Sounded cool for awhile.
Wish Flowmaster had a buy-back program for dissatisfied owners of the two chamber mufflers, who wish to upgrade to a three chamber. I'd be in line!
I'd sell mine, to anyone that wants it, it's an in-line muffler, 1 - 2 1/2" in & 2 - 2" out.

Hey Cali,What are you going to do with your flowmaster muffler? Cause if it would fit on my dynomax 2 1/2 in and 2 1/2 dual out cat back and it doesn't have too many miles on it, I could take it off your hands for you. I also might trade my brand new super turbo muffler (too quiet for me but probably good for you) for your flowmaster.Anyway get back to me or E-mail me at A1N7T@Aol .com. Later

Hey Cali; What are you going to do with your flowmaster muffler?Cause I just got a brand new Dynomax cat back and it has a super turbo mufffler with 2 1/2 in and dual 2 1/2 exits.Don't like the sound (too quiet for me but from what you say, nice for you).Anyway assuming that the flowmaster will fit with my exhaust and your muffler is in good shape, maybe I could take the flowmaster off your hands or we could trade or something? Give me a reply on the board or you could e-mail me at A1N7T@aol.com with a reply Thanks

ok, lemme try to measure it.....how the hell can i not have one goddamn ruler in my whole house?

EDIT: ok, i found a ruler. The muffler has 2 1/2 inch exits and 2 1/4 inlet. But any exhaust shop can make an adapter. It's only a quarter of an inch.

aww, crap. Well i went down to Midas today and the guy was like "oh no, well, i'll have to cut this off and then add some pipe here and add some pipe there and blah blah blah and installation will be $50 instead of $20 and it will take 3 hours Blah blah" so i left. I don't have 3 hours and i don't want to pay $100 especially because i'm gonna get promoted soon and i will have to buy a LOT of tools plus i'm gonna get braces which are gonna cost about 4 grand. So i dunno what i'm gonna do with the car right now......

Find an independent guy.
Ask what 1 hour labor cost is, first.
I have to have pipes put on my 1974 Corvette.
I've got the pipes.
He'll charge me 1 hour about $50-60.
What about a welder in the body shop section at work?

Try
Mission Road
or
El Monte
or in LA somewhere.
Ask where your dealership farms out the body work.
2 six packs and it's done.
MAKE SURE you have it with you all the time. When you score, you're ready.
When it's up on the lift, go get the beer.
I hear it'll be 100 tomorrow.

I know of several muffler places here at the beach.
BUT, there are lots of options out by you!

Dan, you can do the muffler yourself, and you won't have to add pipe. Will the inlet of the muffler you're adding be the same as the intermediate pipe on the car now? If it's not, you might need some of those pipe adapters... they go from 2.5 inch down to 2 inch, and they're like 6 inches long...

But, if the inlet's the same size and you don't need an adapter, you can take a hammer and screwdriver, and bang between the muffler flange and i-pipe. This will ruin the muffler flange, and distort the i-pipe. You can fix the I-pipe with a "tailpipe stretcher". The tailpipe stretcher can do two things- it will bring an out-of-round tailpipe back to round, and it can actually stretch the metal to expand a pipe to another size.

I paid $30 for my Lisle one from Pep Boys, but you should be able to rent the tailpipe stretcher from a big auto store. (Pep Boys or AutoZone or Strauss or etc). Hopefully they work like Pep Boys- rental is free!! Pep Boys requires a deposit equal to that of the tool cost, and then you get ALL that money back when you return the tool. If you don't return the tool in a week, keep it, because they keep the deposit- and you bought the tool.

Use a ton of pentrating oil, like Liquid Wrench, on the joints a day or so before you attack it.

Another way of removing a muffler from a pipe is to cut the muffler flange lengthwise. This puts a slit in the muffler flange, and you pry the muffler flange apart with a screwdriver, which reduces the damage to the pipe. I have no idea how you'd cut that slit, though, so don't ask. I guess an air-powered cut-off tool would do it... because no way can you get a hacksaw to go lengthwise on the flange.

You can (been there) but, you do NOT want to.
Good idea, tho. And, yep, it can work.
I think Dan has figured out his solution.

Thanks guys. Personally, i didn't see what the problem was. I think this guy was just trying to BS me. If he had just cut the old one out and put the new one in, my tailpipes would have been like 1-2 inches closer to each other. NOT a big deal.

Karl, i usually go to Mike's Muffler in El Monte. He's a good guy, it's just that it's too far away....but i might end up giving him a call.

I forgot to tell you, those bastards gave me a junk compressor so i asked for another one and they gave me one with the wrong pulley on it. The small pulley made the tensioner bottom out and it wasn't doing it's job so my belt started bouncing up and down and the belt HIT my upper radiator hose and took a frieking chunk out of my hose!!!!! I sent it back and got my money back but all the BS caused me to use about 10 lbs of R-12. (but i only paid for 3, tee hee). So now i'm out $100 and still have no A/C.........i have some real good luck sometimes, don't I?

I'm bummed to hear ya on that AC detail.
Sounded like you scored, but, it bit ya. Damn.
I've got someone, up the street, that'll test & charge my AC for $75. I do any needed repairs, but, I'm shown where to repair. O rings are easy.
Did your compressor look like it was leaking? I know you used leak tester to show that answer, but, any leaking signs (fluid stains, freon burns) before you did the test?

We put dye in the system and found a leak at the low pressure switch O-ring. Replaced that, put more freon in it, and out of nowhere the outer seal of the compressor started leaking. So that's all i need is a goddamn compressor......

Want to travel into LA for one?
LOOK IN THE LA BUSINESS YELLOW PAGES FOR COMPRESSOR REBUILDERS! Auto parts, rebuilders section.
Some are out by you, real close.
I know, like you, really surprised that you got a bum one. It seems you can only test those compressor things, by filling system, even to leak test it.
