All the sudden she sounds like a truck!

I have a 1983 V6 Camaro. While driving the other night all the sudden I heard a noise of something snapping and my camaro sounded like the loudest lawn mower on earth, the noise appears to either be coming from the engine or just underneath it. The car seems to have lost a little power when accelerating and when I give it gas the sound gets almost ridiculously loud, sitting idle too it eventually stalls out but will start right back up. I should also mention I recently replaced the clutch, but not sure if that would have anything to do with it.

Any suggestions on what I should be looking at first?

Thanks!

Re: All the sudden she sounds like a truck!

Could be the gasket that connects the manifolds to the Y-pipe, but the fact that it stalls out after idling for a while points me at the cat, maybe... if the cat has gone and the guts of it get pushed to the back of the convertor and plug it, it will choke the engine, AND OVERHEAT IT. Mine did that and my EGR valve MELTED to the exhaust!! If it is just a blown gasket or broken pipe, it would just run loud, not stall out...

Not necessarily, a broken exhaust will make the car run shitty because usually half of it hangs in front of the one pipe such that half of it goes through the whole exhaust and half of it exits at the break, screws things up.

Re: All the sudden she sounds like a truck!

Hey thanks for the two cents guys! This forum is usually VERY helpful.

Turns out that I blew out a spark plug and that's what caused everything. I never even considered that, I figured it was exhaust right off the bat.

Damn good question, I have no idea myself. When I started the car I could hear it pounding and I felt gusts of air coming from the engine, at first I thought I had a cracked engine block, but then I noticed a spark plug hanging down and plugged it back in and BAM, Camaro back to normal. Tomorrow she'll get a full spark plug change and I will loctite them in!

Don't loctite your plugs....you will have to change them again at some point, I would def check the threads on the plug and head though, I would also check your timing isn't off, I honestly don't know how you could blow a plug on a stock engine other than detonation if even that..

Re: All the sudden she sounds like a truck!

I just had the exact problem. The problem with mine was that the EGR Valve had a exhaust leak. Its an easy fix I went to the junk yard and picked one up for 7 bucks and walaah fixed the problem.
