It's a 98 3.4L pontiac. Could I put this in my car as easily as a 94/95 3.4L?

Guys, come on, this is getting like the "this is your brain on drugs" commercial.

Last time: 3.4 is the exact same as a 2.8, is the exact same as a 3.1. All of them. Identical. Across the years. Literally fell out of the same mold.

With that out of the way, let the bidding begin!

That's an East-West engine.
You're saying that engine would also have worked in a Camaro Firebird North-South set up?
I UNDERSTOOD they were different.
I have the intake manifold & LOTS of other stuff for the North South set up, too, for sale.

YES! They would absolutely work. All the holes are pre drilled, you might need a new flexplate, that's about it.

If I wasn't a college student, and as broke as you, do you think I'd be telling anyone about this? IT's a GM 60* block, it's like legos.

Er, wait a sec. No front wheel drive 2.8/3.1 drops into a rear-wheel-drive f-body. Is this 3.4 from a front wheel drive van or a rear wheel drive one? Or, did GM change things, and a FWD 3.4 block is the exact same as a RWD 3.4 block?

Hmm, now I"m chewing on my shoelaces, but what could the difference possibly be between two 60* blocks? I thought they were all the same? I mean, the pan may have to be switched, but otherwise, I would think they're all identical... It is out of a FWD Transsport, 98.

LOCAL WRECKING YARD I GOT MY ENGINE FROM IS----

Southern California Auto Wrecking
8229 S. Alameda St.
Los Angeles

Ask for Marty, SPECIFICALLY TELL HIM I SENT YOU!

He does NOT WORK weekends.

I informed him that several people may contact him about these engines he still has available.

I'll be out in Northridge, this weekend. I live at beaches. I'll be moving my Wife's stuff from her Dad's house.
Contact me, email & we'll get together, but, I understand it's gonna be raining, for 5 days.

I'm so excited.

NOW,
I've seen the aluminum heads from the East West V-6.
THEY ARE DIFFERENT, as the rockers guide plates are like a big block Chevy, at an angle, compared to our North South engines in F-Bodies.
I really wanted to grab the aluminum heads, but, upon seeing that one detail, later, to that option.

I REALLY DO NOT BELIEVE THE EAST-WEST V-6 BLOCK CAN WORK IN A NORTH-SOUTH situation.
Yes, same size (internals the same), etc, but, different blocks. As is the 2.8/3. & the 3.4.

THE 3.4 BLOCK IS A DIFFERNT BLOCK, BUT SAME THING AS THE 2.8/3.1.

What I mean is that you cannot bore out a 2.8/3.1 block to make a 3.4. That's all !

If ya wanna see what I got/did, get ahold of me, email & we'll chat/say hi.
Wish it wasn't gonna rain, this weekend, would love to meet all, at Cruisers or Bob's Big Boy.

Just wanna help you guys clear up some things. If you want to use a FWD 3.4, you will have to get the starter holes drilled on the other side.

All FWD 3.4's after 95 I think use aluminum heads. Not a simple matter of swapping them over to iron, because they also have a smaller combustion chambers which require the use of dished pistons. Using alloy heads on an engine that came stock with iron heads will result in a very high compression ratio.

The only real difference between the 3.4 and 2.8 blocks is the external ribbing on the 3.4 to strengthen it up.

Got any questions, let 'em fly, I'll help out the best I can. I'm about to do a rebuild of my 2.8. Compucam 2030, stronger valve springs, full balance..

Doesn't the FWD 3.4 also have different motor mounts, and a different bellhousing for the trans?

When was the last time anyone drilled holes on an engine block with any accuracy?
Start with the correct 3.4 engine for your swap, don't waste any extra effort.
The swap is enough effort, anyway you look at it.
Why complicate things?

At least 2 Fiero vendors have the necessary drill guides to redrill the starter holes, and it's been done countless times by them and other people who have made their own jigs to swap a RWD 3.4 into the Fiero.

As for the motor mounts and tranny, you'd use the one's that were on your 2.8. The tranny will bolt right up, motor mounts should work with a minumum of modification. If you're swapping from a pre-88 2.8, you'll also need a neutrally balanced flywheel/flexplate.

Standard,
Educate me!
I thought that a Fiero was an east west V-6 engine design? You're saying it's a North South engine in there?
When I did my swap, it was a pain in the butt enough to get that starter back in on this Firebird.
Anyone that can drill holes into their block, there, rate real high on my tool chest! !

Could one fit the 3.4 DOHC under those Fiero hoods? This guy I know wants a 3.4 under his Fiero hood.

Yeah, it's east-west, which is why they have to be re-drilled to use a RWD engine. It's pretty much a FWD setup moved to the back. Engine compartment isn't too cramped, except for the front side near the firewall (1-3-5 cylinders). Have to take off the decklid if you want to change the sparkplugs without ripping off your knuckles, and getting to the front manifold is not fun. Still more than enough room for a v8, or just about any other engine you want to put in there. There's been everything from quad 4's to lt1's swapped into Fiero's. If you want a 454, just cut out the trunk and mount it north-south.

3.4 DOHC is no sweat, the wiring is the toughest part. Upgrading to the pushrod 3.4 is dead simple, though. Just swap everything over from the 2.8 to the 3.4 and bolt it in, and low 14 sec timeslips are in the future! Throw a turbo or NOS on there and you'll hit the 13's in no time.. well, i guess it would take you 13.some seconds to hit that

Here's some pics, if any are too big lmk and I'll edit them.
