I beat an LS1 with a Yugo!

Actually, no I didn't... But I got your attention didn't I???? My goal is to get more responses than any of Monkie's posts...damn that kid gets attention

Anyway, the REAL reason I posted this is because I wanted to ask all of you about radar detectors. I don't have one, and I just started looking into them. A good friend of mine (orange rocket) can get me the new Passport 8500 for like $225 from $300. What detectors do you guys recommend? What should I look for in a decent one? Price isn't as imporant to me as one that will keep my a*s outta trouble

I've heard Valentine One is the best - Car and Driver consistently rates it number one - but it comes at a price.

I have an El Cheapo Radioshack model, seems to work fine. Won't save you from instant-on, though.

I know what you mean by Instant on...thats why I haven't gotten one so far...afraid of being too dependent on the detector to save me!

I know C&D likes the Valentine One...would you happen to know how much they're going for? Thanks for your help.

I have an el cheapo Radio Shack radar detector too. If anything if makes me more cautious than I was b4. If you get one, don't depend soley on it to keep you out of trouble. Mine has saved my *** more than a few times though!

I've never been dependant on my detector; but it definately helps! I'm still constantly on the lookout for police cars... in fact my friends usually ask "How the heck did you see him there?"

I use a Uniden unit; but I'm a Uniden lover. The Valentine-1 is a very good detector, with all kinds of fancy stuff, and runs near $300-$400. Pretty much any radar detector is going to be good, though- as long as it's not a no-name brand. I borrowed one for a few months before I bought my Uniden; all of a sudden, after getting nailed with radar, the unit stopped working. It was under warrantee, we sent it back, they said something burnt out inside- I bet from the "attack" the cop gave it. My Uniden's gotten many of those attacks, but is still working strong.

Oh- did you know you also get a 1/2-1 second window to slow your car down when your detector goes off? That might not sound like much, but if you're fast, you can knock your speed down a few MPH... possibly into a lower "ticket" range.

The website in my signature is running a group purchase on a Cobra ESD9000 for $80, but I think it ends very soon. Visit f-body.net, and read the latest digital RPM's (on the main f-body.net menu page) to find the link.

I have the new Escort and it saves you from those STUPID tickets. You know the ones, your listening to your favorite song and don't realize you are going 10 over! Laser works great too, but the instant on is still a b*tch!

I've heard good things about the Escorts...hence why Escort's Passport was at the top of my list.

Thanks for the info about the group purchase Tom...I'll look into that!

Any other thoughts?

My last Men's Health magazine mentioned some kind of association that will pay your ticket for you... if I remember, I'll look it up tonight. Of course, paying the ticket's never the hard part- it's living with the license & insurance points afterwards. Too bad that association couldn't fix those!

On a funny note; I got a big envelope in the mail from the lawyer that handled my speeding ticket 1.5 years ago- turned out to be a sharp looking 2001 calendar.

An association that pays your ticket?? NICE

Although, it isn't like I'm a speed demon. Don't get me wrong...I don't drive THAT slow. But I rarely do more than 10 over...I try to keep 10 over my limit. I've been pulled over 7 times in 4 years (3 times weren't even anything I did!!). Only 2 times were for speeding. I was very cordial, polite, and walked out of 2 15 over tickets without even a written warning!

It's getting to that 10 over that's the fun part

Anyone else have some advice on radar detectors?

I have the Cobra 9850...the top of the line one right now with voice alert. I like it a lot, and got it for 150 off of Ebay. i'd have much rather gotten the ...****, i forgot who makes it, but it comes in 5 pieces, one to go in your grill, an under the dash unit, one to go behind your rearview mirror, and 2 for each side of your back glass. Oh well. Mine does me just fine.

Hey Jason!

What do you want to say with your post.
I come from Yugoslavia and I've seen some good prepared, good running Race Yugos.
Uphill in corners they were a lot faster than my 2,8 Bird with some mods.
Be carefull.

Ok 1st off, if I have offended any Yugo enthusiasts, my apologies Hell, I didn't think there WERE any! However, the few Yugos I have seen throughout the years were barely running...a far cry from beating my 2.8, let alone an LS1. Just a matter of fact!

Next time I wanna get some attention, I'll tell everyone I beat an LS1 with a '74 Pinto. That better??

Hehe....I'll be sure to look into it!

Well with christmas coming, I could ask for a detector, but my other major hobby (biking) has sorta taking a back seat money-wise all year. I wanna get a stationary trainer for my road bike, but they cost the same as a nice detector (Around $200 and up).

Tough decision Thanks again to everyone.

(laughs) Weird- that same issue of men's health reviewed a stationary trainer. Of course the thing was near $1k...

I was pulled over once, and the officer asked me why I had a radar detector. I'm surprised the lie came to me so easily- "It was a graduation present from my sister."

LOL...nice Tom! Sounds like something I'd come up with too!

Yeah, after I last posted on this subject I went to a local bike shop and found the trainer I want for $300...but hell, it'll keep me from getting fat and lazy over the winter

So now the debate is, Valentine One, Passport 8500 or bike trainer? Decisions decisions...

I'd go for the trainer. I don't think the V1 detector is absolutely necessary; yeah it's the best, but my $90 Uniden works just great. Hey- Ebay? (What a rhyme...) Flea markets? Maybe you can snag a used unit for cheap. I have an X-band only Radio Shack one, but it's as big as a car radio! I'm keeping it as a wall decoration if I ever get my pool room the way I want it.
