Distributor cap brands?

Are there any "performance" companies besides Accel that make a distributor cap for us? Or, heck, any non-performance companies?

I'm pretty sure MSD makes one, and AC Delco must. Jumping on the non Accel wagon or something?

I checked, MSD doesn't... that's true, I forget about AC/Delco. Maybe I'll hunt down a price... D314a, $7.82- not too bad.

I guess you could say that about the non-Accel choice; but I've always gotten excessive carbon tracking on the insides of the cap terminals. I'd like to try another brand to see if it'll happen on those.

Tom,

Before I switched to Accel, I always used Borg Warner...the most expensive ones out there, and they're red so they look like MSD

Sure, now I go to Accel and y'all think its sh*t...thanks guys

Borg Warner = red, eh? Sounds good to me! Heh, kinda sad that I'm choosing a cap for it's color, eh?

JoeG, nobody makes a distributor for us. However, you can "hop up" the one you have now. The Haynes 82-92 manual gives step-by-step instructions for rebuilding the distributor. Both Accel and Holley make "performance" ignition modules that you can use in place of the stock one. Nobody makes a performance pick-up-coil, but then again, there's nothing performance about those! You can also clean up the air-gap of the stator... there's a finger for each cylinder that spins around a 6-sided magnet. When the fingers move too far apart from the magnet, the magnetic pulse that the pick-up coil picks up is weak.

So you can improve your stock distributor, but there's no replacements. Although, oddly enough, MSD makes a replacement distributor for the 4-cylinder 2.3l Mustang engine!

Oh- a pickup coil runs about $15, spark module is $60 (for stock or performance). You'd need a set of "feeler gauges" to set the air gap; those are like $5 from any auto parts store, in the tool section. It looks like a pocketknife, but has "blades" of different thicknesses.

Tom, I don't think its sad at all to pick a cap for color LOL. Why do ya think I got the Borg Warner in the 1st place?

I can't count how many times I took the car to a drive in or a show and heard "Dude, a 2.8 with an MSD cap? Nice!!"

Hehe...of course I played along
