Re: fuel tank access hatch

I don't wait until after I put everything back together to replace my fuel pump, I do that once I get it strapped back up. It doesn't take 4 hours to unstrap and redrop the tank.

You will never convince me that cutting a hole that large in my car is a good idea, especially after the crumpled metal I've seen in the car I bought that had an access hole cut.

Here is the size of the hole I cut maverick, I will add the dimensions to this post later today, and you will need a hole at least that big, its fine on width, but I am kicking myself in the *** for not making it go toward the front further, also even the rubber hose is a pita to get on and off in such a tight space, I have to use pliers to pull it onto the line, I strongly suggest if you make the hole that small that you get compression fittings, eventually thats what I will do, but tools and money don't allow atm, also I believe the plug can actually be accessed underneath the car, if you slide underneath the back and look up you can see and reach it, I am reasonably sure that that is it, idk what else would be there.

Re: fuel tank access hatch

The floors aren't a whole lot of the structure, and MANY cars come factory with access panels, not trying to change anyones mind, just pointing out that it IS beneficial, and DOES make things easier, and there is a right way and a wrong way to do it, most people do it the wrong way, personally I did not cut mine as long as everyone else does, because I do not want the hole that close to where the body bends, also personally, I am opting for a panel that I will bolt/screw on, instead of a trap door that doesn't add the structure back into the body panel, and that hole is nothing compared to the size of the one in my floorpan, and frankly I am not happy with the way the shop patched it with some thin as hell piece of tin they riveted in, going to have to get a whole new floorpan anyways, this time I am going to a specialist who will fix the rust the right way.
Most of the structure is in the rocker panels, the doors, and the roof, not to say the floor isn't important, just that it isn't as fragile as a lot of people seem to think it is.

What is your plan for reconnecting the fuel lines?

Re: fuel tank access hatch

While I see the potential value in this mod, I decided against it for a couple reasons.

(a) The P/O of my car already hack the back end up and cut the hole too big to cover it with an available door/cover. I'm already going to have to weld up the butchered area anyway.

(b) Since I'm replacing my sending unit as well, I'd rather not start hacking up it's lines and connect to the old ones... PLUS - I don't have the tools/$$ to do the flares on the lines or use the proper fittings.

(c) I've got to replace the tank anyway, so it's all coming out anyway. PLUS - If I've gotta do it again, I do it again - This'll be the first fuel pump I've ever changed in any of my 6 thirdgens.
