My 3400 T '88 camaro
Bought the car in April this year :
Paid 1500$ for it.
1988 V6 2.8L A4.
I drove it around with the 2.8L for a while. Nice car to cruise in for sure.
3400 engine :
Of course a mini spool, I also got a Mega shifter and 4.10 gears :

Re: My 3400 T '88 camaro
Engine painted up nice, nice, all I did was put in some very very good valve springs, rest it stock. :
Turbo : Garett 60-1 .70 comp .63 turbine.
Hacked up 2.8L RWD manifolds to work with the 3400 :
Serp belt setup, moved everything to the drivers side. :
Frame notch to clear FWD oil pan :
'7730 ECM from 1991 J-body installed (well in the works) :

solid mounts mock up :
Lotsa room for a turbo :
Vid of 3400 running :
Well, I drove it just like this, with the 3400 for about 3 weeks. Fun with the mini spool it had enough power to spin the tires and have some fun.
Eventually the 700R4 trans went for a dump...
So, back to the shop for trans removal, and turbo mock up.
Build turbo 350 trans with some goodies. Full manual shift, no TV cable requird.
Flexplate with oblonged holes to mate to TH350 converter.
Speedway motors TH350 to metric 60degreeV6 adapter plate :
Poly bushings and the B&M swap kit for a third gen braketry...

Turbo mock up...
Installed :
So that's where Im at now...
Im using a 3400 front manifold for the pass side and a 3500 front manifold for the driver's side exhaust.
I haven't bought a wastegate or BOV yet, but Im shopping...
I still have to mount intercooler and piping. Need to upgrade my injectors to Ford green tops, ect, I need to install the TH350 trans as well. It's coming along well.
So, more to come...

Cool! how long have you been waiting to post this up? So you haven't touched the heads or anything? Deshrouding would do some good but I suppose that mongrel turbo will help there.
So what are you doing for engine management? You aren't using the stock map are you? FPR? Details man!

Re: My 3400 T '88 camaro
I didn't touch the motor besides springs cause I want to get another engine and cam it along with other goodies, maybe pistons, I haven't gven it much thought. A cam does wonders on these motors though.
But for now, I just want a simple setup, easy to tune, good idle, ect... I'll make it "fast" later on.
I will be using either code 59 or 8F turbo grand prix tune.
I have a 3400 powered 1991 Cavalier that just made it to the 11's with a supercharger running the 8F tune and green top injectors and the 2000 + 55psi fuel pres. regulator. For software i use Tunerpro RT. (freeware)

Re: My 3400 T '88 camaro
I've heard that code 59 is a bit difficult for the end user. A guy that comes to my shop has a typhoon who was using it for a while was turned off by it. Tunerpro is the only way to go as far as I'm concerned.
I'm thinking you're going to want that turbo to get into boost a little sooner than you're going to get with the stock cam. Just a bit of nitrous will get you there quick.

that turbo looks like its in a great spot, i like them facing that way much better than turned sideways in front of the motor.

Re: My 3400 T '88 camaro
I think that with the 700R4 it would of been alot worse cause 1st gear is soo short. But with the 3 spd. it may be alot better for building boost??
time will tell.
I have a VERY VERY high stall torque on it.
It was stalling at 6100 RPM on my g/f's 454 Nova, but the car runs 10's and makes ALOT of power, so I doubt it'll go that high on my V6...

Re: My 3400 T '88 camaro
Welcome to the forums.
Couple questions about your setup there.
1. Can you get any more pics of your serpentine belt setup and what P/N or length belt are you using?
2. Why did you choose to use the stock 5-speed crossmember with the auto trans, when the auto trans crossmember allows you to use a MUCH cheaper trans mount (that may or may not hold up to the power)? The auto trans crossmember is a direct bolt-in (I use one with my 5-speed) along with the mount. Unless you needed the additional height to align the u-joints...

Re: My 3400 T '88 camaro
yeah i agree heres where mine sits. i wouldve liked to move it back a bit closer to the motor but everything is easy to get to.
im assuming that the belt routing on that motor doesnt have to have the "S" around the water pump and the crank like ours does?

475K6 BELT - yes it does wrap hard enough on the waterpump.
The tensionner I got from a 1994 chevy tracker and modded it to work here, it's a manual one of course... tighten the belt, then tighten the bolt to set tension...
2. ??? I am confused here... That is how my stock 700R4 was mounted... ? Hmmm... Got any pics of your setup ??

Exhaust will go straight back. I'd like to get a AC box delete cover for sure.... they are $$ though.

Re: My 3400 T '88 camaro
i didnt realize there wasnt anything bolted to the other side of the motor, it looked like the belt went from left to right in that picture under the waterpump lol, im going blind i think.
why not just put a v8 in there instead? (had to say it before someone else did)
i actually really like where that turbo sits, it almost in the picture looks like its part of the motor. sits about where my alternator sits

Re: My 3400 T '88 camaro
Looking at threads on LS1tech.com and them sites you can make a little turbo kit on them LS1 cars and run in the 10's pretty easily.
But oh well, let's try the V6 for a while.

I seem to have lost the entire photo set from when I did the trans swap .
I'll have to take a pic when I get back from work in the morning, I suppose.

Umm, that's not very much contact on the waterpump. You know I had to say it. But seriously you need a pulley on the opposite side of the pump to keep it from slipping.

Re: My 3400 T '88 camaro
on that trans mount it kind of looks like an automatic trans mount on a manual cross member.
the manual trans mounts iirc are round where as that one is square like the auto one. i converted mine from auto to manual and i used the auto trans mount and crossmember i had

Good thing I backed up the old files before I switched computers a couple years ago... Here's the pics, with the auto trans first and the manual with the auto mount.

Re: My 3400 T '88 camaro
Bit of work done today, too hot to mess around too much..
Anyways :
Intercooler and K&N performance intake. (which consist of a filter clamped to turbo, ha ha).
Here you can see a VERY haywire upper rad hose.
intercooler is in there nice and solid. Bolted to the lower rad support and the upper rad support. I might make some ducting out of sheet alum to direct the air into it.
Was made for a Buick Grand Nash, but it fits like a glove here. Charge pipes to come next.

Re: My 3400 T '88 camaro
nice work man but i do have a few suggestions for you.
#1 being i saw u said the cnverter was out of a hi hp car and stalled at 6k, id deff send it out and have it restalled unless u start making the same power the converter will always be slipping and u will be wasting alot of power
#2 how did u elongate the holes in the flexplater for the converter ? did u just file each hole out or was it done in a milling machine
reason i ask is the stock flexplate is very weak ive broken 3, if the converter ends up just the slightest off center its going to break the flexplate or worse chew up the mains, or input shaft of the transmission
#3 id deff look for a .8x housing for that 60-1 that .63 is going to spool up sooner then u like prolly and will choke the motor up high( expect about a 20-30 hp increase up high going to the larger housing) i run a .84 housing on mine same exact turbo otherwise and it spools up to soon with a smaller motor and lower stall converter

Always open to hear suggestions, thanks.
#1 converter. I am aware that it's not the correct application, however it was a free part so I'll try it and see. I agree with you 100 % though..
#2 the flexplate, all I did was oblong the stock holes with a die grinder. I will re-do this though, take it to a machine shop and have them drill it 100% true,Unless someone can suggest a better way that I can drill this on center at home with regular tools.......?
#3 Funny you mention that, I had orderd the .82 turbine but they called me and said they just had the .63 in stock at the moment, so I got it.
What do you think it will spool at for RPM vs. the .82 ? My plan is to have single 3" exhaust, no cat, no muffler with a 3" turndown right to the back....
I'm thinking of running about 10 - 11 pounds for a bit, then when I get a nice large cam i'll goto 15 pounds and see what happens.

Re: My 3400 T '88 camaro
i hear that on the converter never hurts to try out free parts
he correct way to do the flew plate would to drill totally new holes, and machine shop can do this on center in a milling machine with a rotary table. again u could do this at home to if u are very careful and have a drill press. but being as much wieght as that is spinning i would leave it to a machine shop to do it as a milling machine setup with a rotary table and drill will be dead on acurate
its hard to say on spool but with my .84 housing i can spool the turbo up at part throttle from a dead stop at a trafic light before im across the intersection on a 2 lane road . other then that i never really paid much attention to it on the street , and on the track i just put the motor against the converter which is 4500 rpm
one other suggestion i will make is get rid of the mini spool i have one and street drove my car within 1000 miles my axles were so twisted the tires have a bad bad wobble .
id get an 4thgen posi unit if u have the correct axles u can use one
28 spline axles i belive, an eaton unit is a waste of money as is an auburn unit the auburn will just burn up, and the eaton will just get destroyed when the rear eats itself up.. money better spent would be on a drop in 9inch or 12 bolt rear unless u can fin a 9 bolt or dana 44

Hey Mars! Glad you finally made it over here, and was wondering when you would post the project.
You guys might know him better by his 11sec Cavalier, but I'll let him tell you about that
You probably know me better by my other usernames: Forced_Firebird or ForcedFirebird.
What's the reasoning behind this? Patrick made over 800hp with his t71 powered 3800...and it was turned sideways...
I just did a Protoge t3 install, it's sideways, and my car had two turbo kits, both sideways.....
EDIT: Almost forgot about the 12sec Corsica I turbo'd a cple yrs ago, it was also sideways. It's all about where you can stuff the freaking thing on some cars

Oh I know it's got nothing to do with power it's just personal prefrence. If they have to be sideways no big deal I just like them better the other way. We have the room to do so so that's why I did otherwise it would be sideways

Re: My 3400 T '88 camaro
Hot side and cold side pipes just about done and welded, still need a bit of work at the 2-1 pipe and add a wastegate pipe. Going to header wrap the hot side pipes. I used a flex pipe between banks so nothing cracks and V-band flange for easy removal of the pipes. 3500 Malibu MAXX manifold fits like a glove in there.
And my cheap 50$ 44mm wastegate from ebay.
More to come... slow but steady progress...

You should bring it to the V6 bash next year
I can send you the hitch from mine.. that way you can tow out your Z24 as well.

Re: My 3400 T '88 camaro
X-over pipe all done, notice the large 1X1 square tube supporting the weight of the turbo.
Started on the 3" DP as well.
Coming together nicely.
I've had a bit of time to work on it as I'm on call for work so I'm not venturing too far from home this weekend.
Still alot left to do, but I can see the light now.
Dave one of these years I'll get out the to bash. It always seems to end up pn a weekend that there's some local drag racing up here.

Re: My 3400 T '88 camaro
I don't really understand the question... ?
There's only one 2-1 Y adapter, but where they are joined I cut a 1-3/4" hole in the side and added the wastegate pipe.
This a better pic ?

Re: My 3400 T '88 camaro
you can kinda see the flange for the passenger side header just under the square tubing.
that pipe goes down from the turbo flange then towards the front of the car then 180's up and back to the outlet from the header.
bad angle on the pic...

Oh, lol. OK I see what you mean. No, it's an optical illusion. Dave is correct, just a bad angle on the pic. I'm not that much of a n00b.

Re: My 3400 T '88 camaro
OK, pic of aformentioned exhaust :
Intercooler :
Painted charge pipes, you can't really see but I also made a wastgate dump pipe that exits just below the rad there...:
TH350 - 660 adapter photos :
Trans mods :
block mods :
together :
I also welded in the 5/8" turbo 350 locating dowels but didn't get a pic.
Trans is ready to install.
:P

Re: My 3400 T '88 camaro
Well, code59 is working VERY well now.
Went to the track (1/8 mile only) and ran a couple of 8.0's @ only 11 PSI. (converts roughly to 12.4 - 12.6)
Car ran awsome ! Surprised the V8's.
Full interior with ET Streets in a 26X10.
Pretty pumped that it was soo quick first time out.
Can't wait to see what a cam and porting / turbo upgrade will bring... also more than 5 minutes of tuning and more boost...
couple vids : (running PIG rich)

Re: My 3400 T '88 camaro
very nice
should put u more like 12.5-12.6 in the 1/4 ur only going to gain 20-22 mph tops after the 1/8th
u need around a 7.80 in the 1/8th to go mid to low 12's
heres my run @ 9 psi with the ebay t3/t4 which was also pig rich u can see big clouds of black smoke as my car goes down the track in the video
what were afrs on the run ? how much total timming?
congrats though its going to be a solid running car once u get it tuned a lil better
