Rear End Problems?

Hey guys, I just got a new [well, new to me, lol] 89 RS. Supposedly it has 300k miles on the body but only 36k on the engine. Anyways, when I'm driving, I notice that whenever I give it a little gas and let go, I hear and feel two loud thumps or pops from the rear passenger tire area. I'm wondering if it's a problem with the rear end or not. I'm pretty sure it's not the tranny, the tranny slips once in a while and I can feel that right under my console.

Also I don't think it's getting as much power as it should. I mean even though it's not a V8, when I floor it, it's really pathetic. Literally when I floor it, I'm barely keeping up with normal everyday traffic. Another reason why I think it's the rear, the rear isn't catching all the power it should from the engine. My friend thinks that it sounds like the teeth aren't catching or something.

One more problem, when I'm driving there is a sound coming from the rear. It sounds like I can actually hear the tires spinning, but it's very loud, it sounds like the tires are about to fly off.

Does anyone know if it is a crappy rear end or not, and where can I pick up a nice one for pretty cheap?

Thanks in advance to anyone who responds.

Re: Rear End Problems?

does it make the same amount of noise when cornering or more? check first to see if it came with a factory limited slip it might be gone or on its way. also have you checked the rear diff. cover for any strike marks ie. dints? have you even changed the oil in the diff. yet? also have you checked the oil in the trans?

Re: Rear End Problems?

the thud/thump could also be the spare tire feasibly, or something sizeable in the well rolling around, otherwise, yeah, its probably your rear end, most likely just the gears though, rest probably fine.

Re: Rear End Problems?

Awesome, some replies. I posted this in the Transmission section also and received no responses. When I make a very tight turn it pops twice in the rear back, it might just be me giving it gas coming out of the turn though. I just got some new wheels put on it today, 50 series on 16 inch iroc rims. My dad said the spinning sound would probably be the wheels since they were pretty much running on belts, but the sound is still there. Thanks for the responses.

Re: Rear End Problems?

I would bet that the thump when you get on the gas is the tans. mount...they go out. If it is, replace it with a polyurethane mount from energy suspension. The thump would actually be basically under the shifter.
