help! need timing specs for 3.1
'92 3.1 v6 convert has part of the emission sticker rubbed off and I need to know where to set the timing? I think it's 10 BTDC, but not for sure. I put a new gasket set in the intake plenum and discovered the distributor was loose so now timing is way off! ARRGGHHH!!!!!! I tried setting it at 10 (with the connector apart) and it runs like crap. Will try again this afternoon, hoping the distributor hasn't junked itself (It will tighten up) It's my daily driver,, soall help is appreciated!

It's going to run a bit like crap on base timing. Check to make sure all of your manifold bolts are tight and you didn't miss a vacuum hose as well. And yes, stock base timing on every 60*V6 with a distributor is 10* BTDC.

Thanks!! It's better, but still seems to run like it's running on five cylinders, and there is a tiny backfire if I rev it up in park. The car was running great prior to my changing the gskets in the fuel injector area, and that is when I must have knocked the dist loose. It was a loose a while with the dist ziptied in place(yuch) It ran ok, but has really digressed. It does have 130k miles, but no oil use/smoke. It started throwing oil out the base of the distributor while loose so I suppose that o-ring is shot. It's been 22k miles since I tuned it up so I am staring there and a new coil, then probaly a new distributor, and then get into the fuel injectors. I will re-check for vacum leaks today! any other ideas?

Check the o-rings on the fuel injectors. They are easily damaged upon reinstallation, especially if old. Which is why I generally lube mine up with either a bit of engine oil or trans fluid when I put the rail back into place.
:edit: Also, not knowing all of the repairs you made, did you by any chance move or replace the spark plug wires? If you did, check that your firing order is correct. I know I've switched a couple of cylinders a couple of times.

yeah, Another good idea, I did a pretty close visual inspection with that stuff when i had the rail out and was cleaning the injectors, but I remember thinking I should really put in new o-rings, but I was working on my transportation. If I have to go that route, i am putting in new injectors and I will definately lube the orings! Good idea! By the way. I changed the fuel filter yesterday (Santa needs to bring me a lift-hell!) and it was mounted backwords with the flow marks pointing towards the tank! I put the new one on with the flow pointing towards the motor. How's that for weird?
