Re: turbo question

turbo is good, you can keep your handling. V8 is easy power, and its still an f-body, so its not going to handle like a semi or anything.

Re: turbo question

You can squeeze pretty good mileage out of these motors with tuning. Even with forced induction.

Re: turbo question

i already have bigger fuel injectors, new air intake, headers and exhaust, and others... its pretty quick for a v6 already but looking for 350 power with v6 handling.

its down to either a turbo set up or find a nice 92 z. which would you guys suggest?

Re: turbo question

Well you could always do a 3x00 top end swap if you're up to it. You can do better than a stock tpi put out with a little coaxing and still remain n/a. If you don't feel like tearing the motor apart and your current engine's healthy you could throw a turbo on it. Firstfirebird has front-mount turbo headers he could sell you. Atleast I think he's still making them...

Re: turbo question

alright last question.

Whats the price range i should be looking at if I bring in the car to a shop and having them install the turbo? Me bringing in the turbo set up.

Also whats the price range i should be looking at if I bring the car to a shop and have them do a carbed 350 swap. Me bringing in the engine but not mounts and what not.

Thanks.

Re: turbo question

Read this on the V8 swap ---> LINK

As for the turbo...since you have a 92, if you just slap on a turbo your car wont run very good. 90(?)-91-92 use the MAP system where 89- use the MAF. From my understanding the MAF can read up to 7-9 PSI of boost...where the MAP stock 1 bar sensor cant read boost at all...it just dumps fuel while under boost. To get the most out of it you will have to reprogram your ECM, or install the Megasquirt system, to read a 2 or 3 bar MAP sensor.

I also just noticed you live in California. If you have any of the emission laws where you live its highly doubtful you will pass with either the V8 swap or turbo.

Re: turbo question

A maf can't read 'boost', it measures the extra airflow. You just need to put a 2 bar map sensor in your car and rescale things in the ecm accordingly. Go look around in the diy-prom section, it's well documented.

here's a question, what's your current suspension setup?

depending ont he size turbo u can get 7-12 psi out of the maf setups,

i found a cheap option for maf cars as well ls1 3 inch maf with a maft pro
u could get the abilty to run upwards of 20 psi depending on which maft u go with wihtout making changes to the ecm

on the 90-92 cars u can run a safc with external 3 bar map sesonr and tune that way without ever having to touch the stock pcm

That's what I meant to say...Thanks. Mine doesn't have a MAF, so I have to go by what others have explained.

I'm curious as to how this is supposed to work without retuning. How is the ecm supposed to see the extra airflow without reprogramming to double value or changing the maf tables? The ecm will still use whatever's in the tables regardless of what the translator's telling it. And the v6 ecm's are limited to 150 g/sec without reprogramming. Elaborate, please?

Re: turbo question

basically it cuts the signal in half to dbl the reading of the maf, i keep forgeting the v6 ecm is 155g/sec and not 255, alls the maft does is cut the signal in half, but at the same time it lets u adjust the signal.

on a v6 car u could in theroy run injectors 2x the size of stock with the maf and maft translator,(half the airflow signal = half the injector pulse width) using the adjustments ont he translater u could pull or add fuel as need.

the safc is just a piggy back computer and could use the signal from the aux 3 bar map sesor to adjust the pulsewidths on the stock sd system

its by no means the nest way to do it but is a cheap alternative

Re: turbo question

I think ford guys do something similar to get around changing the injector constant. Can you imagine buying another maf just to install larger injectors? Geez.
