My firstfirebird has traction!!!

Swapped the rear out of an '85 T/A, and also the exhaust while I was at it. The rear is a 9 bolt Borg Warner with disk brakes, the exhaust is a 3" Dynomax cat-back.

Enjoy...

The previous owner of the T/A told me it was a Dana 40, but oh well. The 3.42 posi is better than the 3.23 open, and I got disk brakes to boot.
Took about 7hrs working by myself, with many breaks, including one that was about 1 hr long - soccer try outs for my 9yr old was today, and she would have been dissapointed if I didn't go She hung for a while today, then the two boys came out and watched for a bit after their nap (2 and 5yrs). They all love watching the car being worked on. My 3yr old girl has known what a turbo is for the last 1.5 yrs haha, she's going to hand tomorrow.

Now, to get spacers to run the 11" wide Drag-Lites, the 'Bird will have traction!!!

Re: My firstfirebird has traction!!!

9 bolts dont come with 3:42's, they had 3.27's and one other ratio from the factory, u can buy a set of 3.70's threw strange for that rear though

ur gonan have a hell of a time fitting 11 inch wide rims under there.

a 15x10 with a 26x10x15 slick is hard enough to fit, im trying to install my 28x10.5x15's tom but i have a feeling even withthe bumpstops removes and the fender lips cut there not gonan fit

The Borg Warner unit was the superior unit and it came on such cars as the LB9 and L98 powered IROC-Zs, Formulas, T/As, and GTAs, especially those with the N10 and G92 options. The Borg Warner 9 bolt rear disc posi unit was standard on all 5.7 liter (350cid) TPI cars, and part of the high performance package that was available for the LB9 / 5 speed and the L98 / 700R4 combos. These super tough rear ends came factory with three choices of gear ratios; 2.77, 3.23, and 3.42. Finding one in the junkyard requires some luck, but knowing what gear ratio is installed is a little easier. For gear ratio identification on the Borg Warner rear ends, just consult this chart.

I counted the turns of the yoke in comparison the the tire

Already checked (months ago). 1.25" spacers is all I need...

No, you are correct, it's 3.45 to be exact.

Re: My firstfirebird has traction!!!

i knwo u can fit that rim size but a 10 inch slick wont fit if u use the spacers

15x10 with a 5.5 backspace will get u a 28x10 in there

Re: My firstfirebird has traction!!!

Coming out awesome John, I'm looking for the exact rear myself. Exhaust is going to sound killer, but be sure to shorten those tail pipes to be flush with the bumper though, especially with kids around....

You grabbing the GTA tail lights as well? Your light have 4 bulbs per side, GTA lights only 3 per side....89 & up, the harnesses have a plug under the rear seat, to make the swap super simple. The dark lights will go with your black part better & and you get to ditch the amber sections

I wasn't going to use the lights off the white car, they are in poor shape up close, but do eventually want the GTA lights. Thanks for the heads up on the harness, I'll make sure I grab that before the car goes. I eventually want your sequential kit too, but with the car still under construction the cosmetics are low on the list

I like the way they stick out a little, the old pipes were under the bumber and could hardly be seen. The new pipes are like the ones on my truck, and we haven't had any problems yet :P

I am going to move the passenger side exit though, it's a lot closer to the license plate than the driver's sive. I used the stock hangers just like the T/A did, but don't rmember them being so off center when they were on the white car.

Yeah should sound pretty mean with the big cam and exhaust Thenks for the props.

I have a guy that's been holding a really nice set of them for me, they look brand-new...

...they will get your STS treatment when they go in (eventually ). I was going to buy a set from you guys a long time ago (right after you tested the prototypes, but then blew the second motor and decided it was time for an all-out build.

Now I'm wondering how the 89k mile 700r4 is going to hold up.

I like the way the tips stick out as well. Mine stick out about that far. My brother burnt his shins a couple of times. I warned him about standing to close to the beast

Tips that stick out really improve the sound quality, no echo under the car.

Have done it twice to mine. Setup now has the tips sticking out right dead center of the plate for that euro sports car look to go along with my new hatch.

My buddy hooked me up with a Borla exhaust, albeit setup for a Grand National. Exhaust pipes exit just under the rear side ground effect on both sides. It's starting to grow on me. It's fitting too, especially if I go with the Buick 3.8 Turbo he's now trying to talk me into....

Forgive the rims, they'll be tossed by the end of the week....

Unless you got smog or just visual inspections to pass, a turbo car don't need a muffler/cat. The turbo does plenty to tone it down. Id just run big 3-4in pipe from turbo all the way back to bumper.

Yep, my 3" exhaust on my Turbo I6 2.8L in my Datsun is pretty quiet, especially when idling or just cruising.

Actually they are pretty cool. I'm always fixing up their houses

I don't leave a mess, and right now, it just looks like an extra car is parked in my driveway
