Re: V6 TOP OUT take it to the limit
My old 2.8 would top out at 110 (I only had S rated tires and I didn't want to push them), it had a 5 speed and 3.42 gears. Its top speed was higher than my mostly stock drive train IROC Z28.
I could sware my 2.8 all ways felt like it was built to do 80+ in 5th.
The 2.8 didn't have a speed limiter, I guess they figured it was "just a V6".
The Z28 tops out at about 100 because if you give it more than 1/3 throttle it down shifts out of OD into 3rd gear and pulls about 6000rpm, where it seems like it makes no power.

Really, If I'm on the on the highway doing around 85 and I punch it, my little 2.8 pulls pretty damn hard in 3rd, I had it around 115-120 and it didnt take more then 2-3 minutes max, it deffinatly had more just not the time or place. I've buried my 115mph speedo before. I don't know what you guys are talking about. Might be a fun data log. I'll see if I can get it going and post some results.

Re: V6 TOP OUT take it to the limit
Fastest that I know my old v6 went was 96mph. Clocked in a 55 zone. It was the first drive I took the car outta the neighborhood after installing the 3.4 block.
Id say similar speed to that in my v8 car.
the 3.1 does have a speed limiter on it. I forget what its set at.
The GTP I have had at 129 several times. It really starts to "float"...

Dale, was that a grand prix GTP? I had a 95 GTP with a 3.4 DOHC that shut off at 115 and even there it would float bad.

Ah. Then I'll hook it up. I think my computer knows how fast I'm going. My speedo has been way off since the 4.11's. Lol. Its about 15% off. I go about 75 to do 60.

IROCZ, yes that is a 99 GTP with a few mods but nothing major. Forgot to turn on the siggy.
It gets up to 100 easy. It takes a little bit of work to get that extra 29.

Re: V6 TOP OUT take it to the limit
actually quick math shows 134 mph with the 4:10 gears @ 7000 rpms in 3rdgear, so thats were the car would top out unless i put the 3:42 gears back in max speed would be 160 mph with 3.42's @ 7k rpms in 3rdgear.
hmm i really wonder if the car would pull it, to bad u cant go wot in overdrive, well u can butit would burn up 4th gear in a hurry

I've got 3.23's and no rev limiter w/ my '165 ecm, I might have to do a datalog on the highway to find out what my limit is.

Re: V6 TOP OUT take it to the limit
I just hit ~112mph the other day, fastest I've gone in my Camaro yet. It was in about a 1 mile distance (starting at a 70mph roll, 0-70mph in about 1/2 a mile), 90% throttle... don't see how it took 8 miles to get to 119, I could have kept pulling a little bit more but the road was going slightly up hill, into a sweeping left turn with an on ramp at the right. Too much risk of other cars and possibly police at that point.

Re: V6 TOP OUT take it to the limit
I've had my IROC at 120 sumtin and it felt like I was doing 70, but 115-120 in the Sport Coupe felt the same, the IROC just felt "heavier". The Car and Driver article I think it was, topped out the 87 IROC L98 at 149 and change. But back to the important stuff, in a few months when the little beast is done I'll update you on a v6 top out run.

Re: V6 TOP OUT take it to the limit
You have an auto I take it? Put in the Drive selection with out the big O around it, thats drive w/o overdrive (in other words 3 speeds) and you'll notice a big difference, mine got to 115ish no problem, and had plenty left. Forget about performance in overdrive, all overdrive is good for is gas mileage.

Re: V6 TOP OUT take it to the limit
Not at all, there is a reason you have the option, its for more "power" like if we had s-10's and were towing something, you wouldnt want to use overdrive, I wouldnt worry about it, youll just get crappy gas mileage. Dont neutral bomb it or do to many rollbacks and your tranny will be fine, especially with the minute power we have stock.

Re: V6 TOP OUT take it to the limit
You shouldnt have to redline it, redline is 130something in the 3rd, maybe higher, I was doing around 115ish at 3400rpm in the 3rd, thats with 3.42's, I think you have 3.23's so you should be fine. But yes these little 60*s can take a serious beating. Can you take a video of you doing a WOT pull on the highway?

Re: V6 TOP OUT take it to the limit
I topped at 122 coming across I-40 in New Mexico. Had to use a TI-83 calculator to get the speed(had my passenger time between mile markers over a five mile stretch and average it out). This was in a 170k 2.8 with auto and 3.42.

to big for youtube? youtube lets u upload to 100 mb, if u have windows xp open windows movie maker and load the video and then save the movie file u can shrink a 200mb video down to about 20mb and still have good quality

I'll try and get a video of a pull up to about 110mph, probably Saturday since I'm off.
I got my cat taken off yesterday, so you should be able to hear the engine over the rush of wind now

My v6 broke 110mph before I ran out of road. It did 100 in less than a mile. With 3.42s it was about 4500rpms @ 110mph in 4th gear. It was a year ago. It doesn't take long to break 100. Also it was quite stable at 100mph.

Ive done 65mph in a 65mph area before
I see no need to do anything like that on the street and possibly lose my car...or anything else that could F up my future (ie. Hit other cars//people//lose control and get hurt)
Just not worth it IMO on the street.

100% agree. I was younger when I did that and it was incredibly stupid of me. It's rare that I'm even five over the speed limit now.

that is true...i was younger when i did that...well not that is not so true it was a year ago (i was 18...), but i had just gotten my car and i was cocky (you all know how a guy gets when he gets his FIRST car, with HIS own money, and in HIS name, with HIS own insurance policy...haha) and i raced a Camry, just BARELY beat him...so i figured out REALLY quick that... "DAMN...my is not so fast at all..." but ever since then the fastest i go is maybe ten over...and thats when i am rushed...

my friend let me drive his stock 89. i took it to 103 and backed off because that thing was scaring me. i was holding the steering wheel way to the right, and it was sloppy response so I didn't push it. I've gone 108 in my cavalier and my all time top speed is 137 in a 06 cadillac STS. I would have gone faster in the cadillac but there was a truck coming. it would've buried the 160 speedo easily.

5.768mph on my John Deere Riding Lawnmower
42mph in my cousins Porsche 944 (damn conservative drivers)
97mph in a Chevrolet Colorado I-5
112mph in my 92 camaro 3.1 (rev limit)
116mph in my and my friends Jeep Cherokees 4.0 H.O. (rev limit)
118mph in a 94 Ford Windstar MINIVAN
132mph in my Moms 07 Toyota Camry I-4 (too fast for a plastic car)
184mph in my cousins 94 Ford Mustang in 4th gear
Thats my top speed history. I hate to admit it but, the best was the 94 mustang. 5-speed, diff rear end, and lotsa work on the 4.6.
I've never really experienced whiplash from a motorized vehicle before or since that majestic ride down one thin *** and bumpy as hell country highway.

Re: V6 TOP OUT take it to the limit
Yeah I got a 89 firebird 2.8L and I topped out at 116mph on the freeway. I let off because the car was shaking and it was in mid day.
with a loud *** exhaust I think its an imitation of flowmaster.
that was the only time I taken it that high, most of the time I only hit 85 to 90 on the streets. some back road.
my bird needs a radiator. major leak, I don't know if I can weld it or not, the water just pours out all over the cylinders. what a mess. oh plus I have to smog it, which wont pass.and tags and insurance, car sits, but I start it up every 2 or 3 days. so it don't drain the battery. oh and I also need new front tires and breaks and rotors. also I had to rebuild the trans, had a shiftkit on it.
the trans works fine now, so once I get all the other things fixed I am gonna do another speed run.
because I know at the time I maxed out the tires were kinda wearing out and it was before the trans rebuild. and I had problems.
and once I do that, next year I will save money and do a swap I want to do an LS3 motor swap. I was thinking an ls1 and then an ls2 but I am not sure.I want to try something different.

Re: V6 TOP OUT take it to the limit
OK my camaro shakes, rattles, and DUMPS RAW FUEL out of my tail pipe bad enough that mesquitos have no chance around me. If the pollution does not kill them the loud rattles will drive them to fly in front of a Semi and commit suicide. But with that out of the way I hit around 100 at a desperate attempt to get beside one of the new challengers. It was scary and my seat is now brown.

Re: V6 TOP OUT take it to the limit
137mph in my old pontiac fiero with a 2.8 and 3spd auto
160+ in my old 83 z28 with aid of a 250 shot and 450hp motor build 700r4
140 in my old 85 rx7 that had ALOT of work into it and a 9500 rev limit
about 120 ish in the 88 firebird with 3.4 but I was just seeing what she could do before performance mods.
And the fastes I have ever been on 4 wheels is in a 03 VW R32 that had a turbo, AWD, 6spd, full body kit and I went 200+ on I95 from daytona FL to Miami transporting the car for the audi dealership I worked for. Nothing shifts like a german car and haveing a 600+hp out of a v6 is really nice with AWD and being able to dump the cluch and burning out all 4 tires is nice.

Re: V6 TOP OUT take it to the limit
I told you 3rd would give you better results I dont know why you broke your tranny mount, it was probably on its way out, when I changed mine I broke a bolt on each side of the crossmember, now I have 2 bolts on in my crossmember and 2/3 holding the mount itself in, luckily its only a 2.8, drove it like that for a while with no problems, no its off the road so I guess it doesnt matter right now, well anyway, when you fix the tranny mount, round 3, you should video tape it

136 MPH in 4th @ 6500 RPM and have the datalogs..
Too bad i was on the dyno
I could have ran 5th up to about 190 but i wasn't sure how well my 140K tranny would hold up.
