ok, lets turbo my 2.8!!

Ok guys I have descided to turbo my firebird. It runs GREAT but going uphill with 3 passengers into a headwind..... welll you know..shes a little poochy.

So here is the equiptment I am planning on buying,

Turbo http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...041017874&rd=1

Intercooler http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...230319493&rd=1

Fuel Injectors http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...090648618&rd=1

6:1 FMU http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...250556465&rd=1

BOV http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Turbo...3286.m14.l1318

Boost controller http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_Car-...3756.m14.l1318

I need help finding good couplers and a 36mm wastegate that has a 3.XXX psi spring as Dave says.... As well as the 2.5in piping. I am going to start this weekend scrapping my condensor and a/c system. Then I will be ordering all turbo parts and going to my uncles house to weld her up!! Advice for someone thats never installed a turbo before would be good.

Also Dave where did you relocate your battery to?

Ok, now my motor has 148XXX miles on it so I am going to need to do a little rebuilding before she will take 7psi huh? I was planning on valve guide seals and rings. As well as a nice hone job. WHat else should I look into? I would like to keep this as cheap as possible but still have a car to drive after a week of boost.

the intercooler dont bother with,i paid 20$'s for mine, go buy one of the new intercoolers for 100$'s when i get out of work tonight i can post up a link for you

the fmu is good

injectors are over priced, ive got 19# and 24 # injectors ill let go for 50 shipped

bov and boost controller are both fine

yup pretty much , i have much better pictures then whats posted ill post some more up for u when i get out of work in a few hours.ill also get u the links for cheaper stuff on ebay.

btw my recomendation is leave the motor alone, just boost it, no point in wasting the money on the 2.8, if it blows u have the money u saved by not rebuilding it to get a 3.4 etc
----------
lemme revise my previous statement, throw a timing chain on it and call it a day.

Re: ok, lets turbo my 2.8!!

I am going to need a new AFPR too, where should I look for one? I will have to cut apart the front hood latch aerea to make the intercooler mount. Will this effect the way my hood shuts?

Getting a timing chain from napa today and will probably have it installed this weekend. I will also be needing to fix my exhaust manifolds, I have 3 bolts broken off in the cylernder head right now.... EEK! Will have to probably take it into a shot to have the bolts extracted....

Re: ok, lets turbo my 2.8!!

is it burning oil now? worn rings are good less chance of breaking a ringlan cause the rings are to tight. turbo motors need a bigger endgap on the pistion rings.with stock worn rings the endgap will already be opened up. u deff need to get those manifold bolts fixed, and ex system leaks pre turbo will hurt how fast and hard the turbo will spool
----------
no sutting the latch area will not affect how ur hood closes,u just have to be sure not to mount the intercooler directly under the saftey latch area like i did,i had to remove my saftey latch, though its no big deal really

the first one will support more power

Re: ok, lets turbo my 2.8!!

Just don't go over 7 psi without recalibrating your chip. 19# injectors should be perfect for that much though.

If you're looking for cheap parts here's another alternative... I have 19 pph injectors, y pipe, turbo, wastegate, and downpipe for sale that will all bolt right on. I even have 24# (LT1) injectors and a modified computer that will hook right up to your car if you want to run a little more boost, call it a stage II kit, haha.

yes stock 2.8 maf system with 19# injectors will run 7/8 psi with no tunning nor mods required.

ttypes kit is a very good start its will save you a ton of work fabbing the ypipe is pretty much the hard part

not to only run 7psi,if u want to go hihger then 7 psi all u need is the fmu.but the best way would tobe get a megasquirt or tune the stock ecm.

but i will tell u above 10ish psi u will need to upgrade the factory fuel pump to a walboro 255llph pump

Re: ok, lets turbo my 2.8!!

I plan to run 5-7 psi at most... Later I might run higher but to get started I just want 5-7....

So I will not need the FMU then? ( for only 7 psi)

We can turbo the 2.8's?? Thought that was an expensive custom job.

I want to turbo my 84' It has no "go" in it. It will propel itself foreward, slowly though.

the 84 would be a carbed small journal motor, and would not be a good canidate for a fuel injection/turbo swap, the early 2.8's had problems

I need to upgrade her eventually anyway. and you need a FI not a carb to blow, forgot.
I'll probably just get out and push for the extra HP/tq

Don't tell her she has problems, she'll get more...

Re: ok, lets turbo my 2.8!!

something unexpected tonite happend. Me and my sister went to go get eat something to eat but on the way home my bird kept dying when I came to a slow down. It would kind of burble and die. when I was going up a hill it had no power and acted like it was really lean. I am guessing I may need new fuel filter and fuel pump. Maybe an idle control motor too. This is definatly slow down the turbo process...

Re: ok, lets turbo my 2.8!!

I've been asking $500 or best offer for:
-T3 turbo
-modifided y-pipe (with or without manifolds and newish bolts)
-stainless downpipe with wastegate and O2 bung
-i'll throw in 8 used 19# injectors from 86 305 TPI transam
-$extra for t4 60 trim compressor upgrade (currently on the turbo) if not I'll put it back to stock t3 50 trim.

I can't separate anything, because the rest of the system will be useless afterwards.

OK...Finally got my exhaust manifold bolt out (the ones that were left ...) And I am going to get some gaskets and new bolts from napa today. Should be dont by tonight. Next I am going to have to put on a timing chain and get ttypecamaros turbo kit... I will post some pics of the damage later tonight.

Ok what should I keep of my emissions hoses ETC..... I broke one of the small ones going to the decel valve today getting my manifold off. i am guessing scrap the whole ****ing systemor what?? Charcoal cannister and all. Will post pics of this junk later. there is no emissions checks in nebraska hehehe.

Re: ok, lets turbo my 2.8!!

Ran into a problem tonight, when drilling out my 2 exhaust bolts that were broken off in the cylender head I drilled off to the side of the bolt and into the cast iron cylender heads. So now i have two unusabe exhaust holes. Great! My only other option is to take the heads to a machine shoip and have them drilled out and helicoiled. This is going to cost a lot of money and time. I am losing faith in this turbo project as I am dumping all of this money into a 500$ 150,000mile car. This isnt working. My buddies keep telling me too look into an old RX7 or 300zx maybe an old prelude or civic to turbo.

My car also needs paint, weather stripping, drivers seat belt, radio pod, rear electric hatch (whole unit....), fuel filter, fuel pump, the list goes much longer.

This sucks!

Re: ok, lets turbo my 2.8!!

Here are some images of stuff I have no idea about...

There was a sensor in my airfilter can with a plug going to it. Should this wire/sensor be anything like an 02 sensor?? will I need this later?

Second there was some lines that came from my charcoal cannister that went to a decel valve or something like that. I just clipped the lines and left them open to vent. The line that went to a metaltubing I plugged (gas tank line) what will I have to do with this later?

The two lines that went to decel valve fron cannister I clipped to vent.

The line that was large and went to fuel tank I plugged with a bolt...

O2 sensor think In my air filter can?? What should I do with this??

Sensor plug that went to the air filter can (o2 sensor thing??..)

The larger plug goes to MAF sensor smaller goes to who knows what in my air filter can...lol

the sensor in the air filter housing u need, its the air temp sensor. the vent line comming from the tank u can leave pluged if u get a vented gaS cap. if not goto autozone.pepboys etc and get a samll breather filter to put on the end of the line

The other two lines can be left to vent then I am taking it?

Ok I am going to get some AN line.

I am going to proably get 6 feet of 4an line and 6 feet of 10an line. Than a 1/8th T fitting male 1/8th to male 1/8th fitting. Then a 1/8th to -4an line fitting.

Here is my recent progress..... Moving battery from drivers side to passengersside (done by removing air-box and charcoal can) Y pipe is pretty much out of the car. I need to go get a 3 wire 02 sensor. drivers side is ready for 3.5in hole for intercooler piping to maniflod.

Re: ok, lets turbo my 2.8!!

I get my braided oil lines from McMaster.com $15.47 for 42" with both ends installed. Search for "braided ptfe hose" and goto the bottom of page 245 on the online catalog or just search the website for item: 4468k631

This hose is the size of -3an (3/16"ID) hose, but uses -4an fittings.

Here is a complete list of everything you need for the oil feed from McMaster.com (under $30):

QTY: 1 of 4468K637 @ $15.47each
QTY: 1 of 50785K219 @ $1.65each
QTY: 1 of 50635K403 @ $2.87each
QTY: 1 of 50675K161 @ $1.78each
shipping will be around $5

Re: ok, lets turbo my 2.8!!

sorry, its a tee to go between your oil pressure sensor and the engine... 50785K219

You need to use AT LEAST 1/2 ID for the drain side (which is equal to a -8an). Its hard to say exactly whatyou will need since everyone finds a slightly different solution for returniong the oil. I can give you a list of what I used if you want.

Re: ok, lets turbo my 2.8!!

Sorry for the late reply guys, My dad told me that if I sold my V6 firebird he would put money down for a V8 (instead of turboing my V6).

Thought I would post some pics of my new camaro, 1989 RS with 305 TBi
good paint, cruise, tilt, power locks fancy Ipod radio, Interior looks like new, 123,000 miles. I am looking for a good throttle body for it and a performer intake. Of course an open element..

TBI? Yikes, should have kept the V6....

Just kidding, good luck with her....

I'm almost finished w/my Holley Projection TBI conversion. Comes w/EGR to remain street legal, and you'll have the option to go back and forth with either a carb, or TBI with an adapter plate. Been extensively ported as well. Should be finished soon, if you'd like it....
