Junkyard Parts List

I didn't see this anywhere in the searching, but what parts from non-fbody vehicles can be used? For example, I think firstfirebird mentioned that 1.6 rockers can be had cheap by tearing into a 3100 engine. Obviously, we can get the heads/intake from a 3100/3400/3500 to make a hybrid. What other interesting goodies can be had?

The 3.4 block is an obvious one most everyone here knows about... it's also f-body. I want a compendium of non-fbody parts. Stuff that isn't so obvious to most people.

What did the cams come out of?

Re: Junkyard Parts List

Fiero valve covers comes to mind.

3100 has to be a 94 or 95.

Re: Junkyard Parts List

The cam is any company that has them. Comp 260 seems to be the most popular (the one that I am using). Any major company that has cams but mae sure that it can work with a computer or not, Edelbrock doesn't but the Comp 260 and 272 work with a computer, 272 with a tune.

We're talking *junkyard* parts, not new stuff.

Re: Junkyard Parts List

Cams can be bought new pretty cheap. You could grab a turbo from another car to use. Not sure of what is good to get one from though.

Re: Junkyard Parts List

I thought about making a list, but there's such a huge selection of stuff out there making a definitive list is kinda hard. And how do we define 'compatible'? Only 60* v6 parts? Even then some of the newer 60* parts won't retrofit without significant work.

Perhaps not entirely definitive... just stuff that is incredibly useful. Like the rocker thing or the FWD heads.

Re: Junkyard Parts List

Well, the 3500 crank retrofits into the 3.4 block after the rod dowels are machined, just about any 3x00 heads/intake manifolds (exc. 3500 heads on 2.8/3.1 block), LS1 valvesprings can retrofit with spring pocket machining, the fwd blocks can retrofit with a new k-member and changing the starter position, dohc heads/intakes retrofit with lots of work, most roller cams/tappets can retrofit with minor changes (exc. vvt cams), 2.8 & 3.1 cranks can swap universally, the list goes on...

Something I've wondered about is which water pumps flow the best. I bet the 3.4 pump flows the best of the rwd blocks.

Re: Junkyard Parts List

Roller lifters don't go in Gen1 blocks without MAJOR modification.

DOHC heads have been tried by Six_Shooter, and my interest in them stoped there.

You can use a hydro brake booster from certain yrs of Astro vans, however. This eliminates the big vacuum booster from the fbods, but has to be run off the power steering instead.

The brake booster would be interesting. My friend's '85 BMW has one. Quite different.

Isn't the S-10 stall converter higher then on the f-bods?

Re: Junkyard Parts List

Higher up? Nope.

Sbc cam bearings fit, small journal sbc rods fit after narrowing the big end (although stock rods are forged), 4th gen axles are a direct swap.

Small ends need a bushing, big ends need shaved and the tabs need to be machined to hold the bearings.

All this is assuming you get the "small journal" 5.7" 327 rods.

Re: Junkyard Parts List

Forgot about bushing the small end. Balancing would be in order too.

What advantage is obtained from using SBC cam bearings over stock ones?
