Good turbo for its price?

Hey everyone, I'm new here as well being new to modifying cars haha, but I'm trying my best to learn.

I have a 3.1L 1991 Firebird, and have looked at tons of turbos and air-intakes that say they are the best for some reason or another.

Sorry if this question has been beaten to the ground (as I imagine it has), but on a relatively inexpensive budget, what do you consider to be a decent turbo for it's price? If you know of any cold air intakes too, that would be wonderful as I have found very few that say they'll fit. (but then again, maybe they all fit and I'm just being a 'noob', haha)

thanks if you can help.

The best bang for your buck would be to grab a turbo from a junkyard and have it rebuilt. You don't need to buy an aftermarket 'cold air intake' either, the air cleaner that came on tpi and v6 camaros draws ahead of the radiator and flows plenty with the baffles removed.

Re: Good turbo for its price?

youve got a firebird so you cant run the camaro intake. try searching for any of these questions, youll come up with a lot of info that youre looking for. and if youre looking for a turbo "kit" for our cars, they dont make them. youll have to piece it all together yourself and make your own pipes, etc. as far as a cold air intake, youre also gonna have to make your own. people have posted "how to" threads on here

Re: Good turbo for its price?

you should try to find a stock Garrett turbo from a Buck Grand National or TTA. these are reliable and cheap (easy to find used) and with proper tuning can send a V6 car into the mid to low 12s. Not to mention with all the turbo buick fans there are tonnes of parts available for these turbos. By the way I have one from a 1977 buick (same turbo that came on the pontiac 301 V8 in 1981) If your interested..$150.00

If it's the Garrett M24, then you will need two to make big numbers. One turbo will choke up high, but make some nice torque. A single M24 came with the McCleran Grand Prix 3.1 turbo (+-200hp)

Re: Good turbo for its price?

ya but if yo do a turbo install dont you need new fmu an injectors or is that only for ppl who are using a reli high psi. Im thinking about installing a turbo also (mabe in the spring) and im looking for a small turbo because it my everyday car and i dont reli wanna put too much stress on the tranny so ill probabally run it at around 5-7 psi. When i do race i want the car to kick v6 mustangs to the ground...

If you are not going to tune the ECM, then you need the FMU to deliver enough fuel without detonation.
