Megasquirt FTMFW!!!!!!!!
today i got the tach issue straightened out, the guys who built the unit had left out some of the tach circut which was causing my eratic tach signal.after 17$'s including the price of the correct soldering iron to solder to the circut board i had the car up and running without a hiccup.
me and rob spent about 1 hour tunning the car afterwards and i have to say the car idles better then when it was on the stock ecm, throttle responce is great,
not to mention the car pulls dam hard to my 6k+ redline
for anyone considering doing some extensive mods i would highly recomend a megasquirt unit
i will start writing up my howto as soon as i get some pics of my install as it will make it much easier to understand

Re: Megasquirt FTMFW!!!!!!!!
Have to admit, that was pretty damn awesome. Car pulls like a raped ape from a dig, w/out the turbo even installed yet! What takes most experienced tuners days to tune, MegaSquirt will have done in about an hour or two (with proper datalogging, of course).....

Re: Megasquirt FTMFW!!!!!!!!
I opened the case to look at the solder joints, but never tested it. Yes it was from KingEFI.
Dave, what did you do about controling idle? Did you completely replace the stocker, because MS1 doesn't support a steper IAC?
There's a little more to it than that, I asked that question on the MS boards once I found out I would have to fabricate a fast idle selenoid (I'm ForcedFirebird there). It involved moving some wires on the 37pin connector, and swapping the CPU as you said and I believe some program changes.
----------
EDIT: A nice writeup would be cool. I had planned on using a pigtail and "teeing" of the stock harness so the car could be returned to stock, and the MS could go in the next project (if it came to that decision).
It looks like you wired all the way to the injectors (haven't been around in a few days).

ms1 since it does more, i can upgrade it to ms 2 by just buying the new cpu and pluging it in though

Dave,
Would you recommend this system over a stock ECM? I have an offer to pick up an V3.0 MS for $80. I'm having troubles tuning my SD prom and may want the option to go turbo later on. Let me know what you think. Since I already made a pigtail adapter to use the SD on my MAF, install would be cake.

i speak fluent geek (electrical engineer). Sounds like you just splice everything onto the harness that you need. Are you going to have it handle spark?

Re: Megasquirt FTMFW!!!!!!!!
yes i will run spark as well im actually going to convert from fuel only to fuel and spark this weekend.
no i didnt splice at all, well only in 2 places
other then that it would take me 5-10 mins to convert back to my stock ecm

Re: Megasquirt FTMFW!!!!!!!!
I'm looking forward to this write-up too. Going with a MS seems like it will be the only way to get my 3.4 to run the way I want. With the intake, 3.4, and headers, I wonder if the volumetric efficiency and some other factors are too much for the 302 2.8 ECM to handle.

Re: Megasquirt FTMFW!!!!!!!!
just curious how something like this would stack against a haltec? I know they also make a standalone cpu and it has been a whiel since I have looked into it. the main thing I know is the megasquirt is CHEAP compared to the haltec

Re: Megasquirt FTMFW!!!!!!!!
The Haltech reminds me of Windows OS: Easy for everyday people to use, but limited to what is included by the factory.
The fact the price tag is 4 digits just scares the hell out of me. My home PC cost me $600, and that included a keyboard and monitor!
While the Megasquirt is more like an open-source OS: Requires actually learning about electronics and possibly C programming depending on what you want, but the sky is the limit to what you can do. The "General Purpose Input/Output" board will be available soon for MSII, and it'll control electronic transmissions(i.e. 4l60e), as well as ANYTHING else you could possibly want on an automobile. I plan on logging my suspension travel and g-forces when that baby comes out.
Daves12secV6's "anti-lag" is a perfect example of the crazy things that can be accomplished. I'm running my shift light, as well as two other programmable indicator lights.

How's the guide coming along?
Decided that I'm definetly going this way with my 2.8 carb -> 3.1 swap.
I'm studying to be an electrical engineer too, so this is a great chance to learn as well.

Re: Megasquirt FTMFW!!!!!!!!
Well, yes I can solder, I mean if you're going to be an electrical engineer and you can't even solder then damn. I love building little electrical gadgets out of simple components. The megasquirts system is going to be a little more complex yes, but still relatively understandable analogic and digital components, even with a year og university schooling. Yeah!
This is exactly why I want to do this the megasquirt way, a great way to learn about electronics on the practical level, students really don't do enough practical things. That's why I build stuff and build f-bodies for one reason.
This Megasquirt really seems like an ideal solution, especially taking into consideration that I'm going to modify my engine and maybe even add F/I in the future. The aspect of being able to tune everything yourself is fantastic.

yea, the megasquirt is a cool little deal.
i built three now.. i was going to use it on the camaro... then i sold it and went LS1..
then i was going to use on on another project i had.... then i sold it.
now i have a 3rd one.. its halfway installed.. its going to run my lawnmower (no joke)
btw, if anyone has a 1"-ish throttlebody (off a bike, gokart, euro car or something) let me know.... lol.

Re: Megasquirt FTMFW!!!!!!!!
^ yeah, was going to go that route myself, but with RBob's flash ECM just coming out, I soon hesitated. I see you every now and then on LS1Tech.com....
I might have a single throttle body from an old Crossfire setup, need to look around though....

Basically, it's like being able to plug your car into a PC and run everything to your liking.

What about the EGR? Is it not digital on your car? Does it need a signal from the ECM?
So what about with the megasquirt?

Re: Megasquirt FTMFW!!!!!!!!
What do you need EGR for?
If you run the megasquirt I don't believe it has an output for EGR control. Maybe if you used the add-on relay board. EGR is not necessary for engine performance anyway, and I don't think you could get a smog inspection to pass using MS.

Re: Megasquirt FTMFW!!!!!!!!
I just remember hearing about engines being damaged over time when the EGR had been removed. Anyone heard of that?
But what about the older style EGR? Vacuum operated? Does it use a vacuum sensor to control it though the ECM or just straight up vacuum?

Re: Megasquirt FTMFW!!!!!!!!
the only "damaging" issues are on older EFI cars while in open loop... it works like this:
if the exhaust gas is going back into the intake, theres less oxygen there.. so the computer pulls out some fuel.
but if you remove the EGR and the computer thinks its there, it pulls fuel, but the O2 is still there.
this makes the car run lean.
if you have other issues that make the car run lean too, then theres the potential for issues.
but since the Megasquirt is not changing fueling for EGR, this is a non issue.
on most cars, you can remove the EGR without issue, then just flash the ECM/PCM so it doesnt throw a code.

Re: Megasquirt FTMFW!!!!!!!!
It will slighly raise combustion temps. I have hade mine off the Firebird since I got it, and it will throw a code after highway driving. The light has been on in my truck for aprox 70,000 miles and have had no issues with performance of mileage. Some newer cars will not run properly if the EGR is malfunctioning, but no worries with ours .

Re: Megasquirt FTMFW!!!!!!!!
Yeah, didn't realize how popular they were, as you rarely hear about them w/Domestics (until recently). I received mine not too long ago, and my cousin is looking to do something similar to what this guy had done (Click Here, Click Here, and Click Here), but with my 92's Turbo 3.1. I'd like to get it's install, as well as tuning, all on video for the V6 crowd....
oh they're around everywhere.... you just dont hear about them as much when you have a fully unlocked ECM for the car.. (like most GMs...)
theres just less people that need them when the stock ECM works just fine.....
Parish, the guy with the twin turbo fullsize pickup thats been in a few magazines, runs a megasquirt on his genIII/genIV engine..
