V6 insurance changed!! ALL FIREBIRDS are now performance vehicles!

---a mod might move this, sorry if it's in the wrong spot, but it mainly affected the V6 guys, so I put it here--

I don't know how many of you know about it allready, but my dad has called 3 times to verify it, ALL FIREBIRDS are now classified as performance vehicles, no matter what engine size.
I'm a 17 year old male, no accidents on my record, with minimum coverage (pretty much only my body is covered) and our bill was $1,107 for 6 months.
The last one was about $740.

Insane.
I'll be 18 soon though, hopefully it will drop a little bit.

So this really sucks. I am 18 with a v6 bird and I am about to get insurance on it in a month or so. Are all maro's considered performance vehicles too?

That's probably because of your age (less than 3yrs driving experience), location, or insurance company. Mine being a V6 made a difference on my insurance (lowered it). And my driving record is pages long, lol.

Hopefully this doesn't effect me lest I'll be picking up a beater to be my DD, selling the Camaro and buying an LS1 for the bird. Lol.

Where are you located?

Re: V6 insurance changed!! ALL FIREBIRDS are now performance vehicles!

You may want to shop around for a new insurance company. I only pay around $100 per month for just liability on my GTA, and I'm 17 with a clean record too. Of course, I'm on my parent's policy and they have clean records too, so that probably helps a lot. Check out Allstate, that's who I'm with, and I'm pretty happy with them. I just hope I don't get any nasty surprises like you did any time soon though. *knocks on wooden desk*

Over 21 is the next discount after three years driving experience (if three years comes before the 22nd b-day) . Get married it's cheaper, have multiple cars it's cheaper, etc, etc...

Until you have kids (driving age), then it gets much more expensive, lol.

Re: V6 insurance changed!! ALL FIREBIRDS are now performance vehicles!

I pay ~$117 a month. Just basic coverage for me and not for the car. The big discount is at 25 or married for me. I am on my own plan. I am actually saving my parents money.

What I would like to know is why 'birds and not Camaros? Not saying that I want higher rates but why not have higher rates on basically the same car?

Re: V6 insurance changed!! ALL FIREBIRDS are now performance vehicles!

I have 2 Camaro's (83' and 89') both 2.8L v6's... minimum liability is 250 every 6 months... i won't get full, but what i did was go ahead and add uninsured motorist (which pays for my car, and medical bills if someone doesn't have insurance), and the other one where if i hit something other than a vehicle (tree, pole, etc), or i flip it, it's still covered... it went up to 300 every 6 months. all in all, $50 a month (total) for 2 cars!! =)

I just turned 22, clean driving record for 6 years, B (or better) student. So, don't give your hopes up!

oh yeah, full coverage for both is around 500 every 6, but i don't need that.

Viking Insurance is the shizzle.

Re: V6 insurance changed!! ALL FIREBIRDS are now performance vehicles!

I'm really surprised because our insurance told us this was gonna be a nation-wide thing, as in, no matter what insurance company you have, a firebird of any year and any engine size would be considered a performance vehicle...
She even called the "underwriter" and he said it was a final decision.

I hate thinking my engine is classified as "performance" when it's smaller than the one in our minivan. Yet the two vehicles probably weigh about the same

Edit: Noah, I'm in Jacksonville, FL by the way...

Re: V6 insurance changed!! ALL FIREBIRDS are now performance vehicles!

well 1st off it is a performance car that is the reason you got it instead of a camry ill assume

2nd fl is sky high insurance regardless of what you drive tends to be almost double that of ohio

try this i bet you will se a major differance if you attempt to insure a Gta
but a firebird has always been a sporty car and people tend to drive them fast regardless of engine size hence higher rates

Re: V6 insurance changed!! ALL FIREBIRDS are now performance vehicles!

Well...I'll share the touching story of how I aquired my baby...

My cousin owned it, but no longer drove it, because he lived in California but we would see him for Thanksgiving when he came down to see his parents whose house we also went to. They lived in Georgia. The car was there at his grandparents house, just sitting under a tree. He used it while he was in college but when he moved, didn't take it with him. So I'm like 13 and one day he just told me "When you get your license one day and can drive, you can have that car." Now, when I'm 13, I'm like yeah, thats cool, but in 4 years who's gonna remember that?"
Well, here comes the age 16, and my uncle brings up the car. We get it on a flatbed (didn't run after years of sitting), bring it down to Florida, and it's been living here ever since.

So the irony is, the car was free, now the insurance is costing more than the cars worth in a years time.
But I love it , so it's staying.

I pay $160 a month for a Formula and a Dodge ram both of which have full coverage. I also have one totaled car under by belt.

You guys need to shop around. I use Geico btw. (I get a military discount too just FYI)
