It does sound like a bad thermostat. I would try the easy fix first. If that doesnt work to good have your cooling system flushed. Good luck

when u come to a stop there is no air moving threw the radiator, thats why the car has a fan.i can run my car all day long on the highway without turning the fan on and it wont go over 165* if i come to a stop and dont flip the switch for the fan temps will go up over 220* in a hurry but will drop again once i start moving

yeah, i had the same prob last summer, ended up replaccing everything, then t-stat, radiator, fan, then still acted up so i got a new water pump, when i took it off the block the inside propeller wasnt even attached to the water pump, now it sits at about 165.

Not really, but make sure it is your pump before making any assumptions. First start the car like
I said and see if the fan is comming on. If the car runs hot (past 220*) and you don't hear the fan it is going to be the relay or fan motor. If the fan is comming on (and the pump isn't dripping) check your t-stat (if you take it out to check, might as well replace it, they are like $8). The next step is radiator cap (about $4). Then water pump (about $30).
Also if you want to save some time and money, make sure the system has nice and green fluid in the radiator. If it is brown and nasty, flush it before anything else, and test by letting idle.
I suggest you spend the $15v on a Haynes or Chilton manual and read it cover to cover and all the basics are in there if you are not mechanically inclined and want to learn .

Re: At A Stop Car temperture Starts To Rise???????
just go to autozone or napa, and pick up a new fan motor for about $20. and then swap the old one out for the new one. heat the car up again see if it turns on, if so you should be good to go. you dont really want to hot wire it though becuae if you leave the fan running all the time it will burn out the motor much quicker, so far every summer i have gotten a new fan motor for my car becuase of this.

I have the same problem the OP is having.
I had replaced the relay that is attached to the firewall. Started the car up, it got warmed up and the fan kicked on.
But
Now when the temp gauge goes a little bit above the first line the check engine light comes on. I'll drive, the needle goes down, the check engine light goes out. Ugh, I hate cars sometimes.

Water pump is easy, just a few bolts and hoses and it comes right off. Lots of room to work on it, too.

you can drive it, but you have to watch the temp guage like a hawk if it goes past 220-230 turn it off asap, i would suggest not to drive it but if you got to.
edit: i would also suggest buying an aftermarket temp guauge for like $15 at autozone or napa, this way you know exactly what your temp is. they are very easy to install.

Re: At A Stop Car temperture Starts To Rise???????
Well I didn't see this mentioned yet, but:
Did you check the coolant level? Your radiator isn't running dry, is it?
Actually I think the water pump is a real pain to change. The actual replacement isn't bad, but scraping off the old gasket while trying not to gouge the seal's surface on the aluminum timing chain cover- that's the pain. I've done that job 5 times already.
If you do change the thermostat, take a drill and put two small holes "north and south" in the edge of the thermostat's ring. These will help keep air pockets from forming underneath the thermostat.
You could also remove the radiator cover (across the top of the radiator) and make sure there's no piles of leaves or dead bugs between the front of the radiator and the back of your a/c condensor. That won't help when the car's stopped and idling, though.
When is a 3.1's fan supposed to kick on anyway?

Re: At A Stop Car temperture Starts To Rise???????
even if your fan(s) are running, low fluids will do this also. the fans aren't strong enough to keep that little bit of fluid that you may have in your radiator cooled, but when you start moving again, that stronger airflow will cool you back down quickly. I found this out a few days ago when my heater core leaked out most of my fluids, core is now bypassed and I expect no further problems being that my fluids shouldn't be escaping anymore.
