for those who have headers

since it's coming close to getting the camaro back on the road, I have being polishing up some things, and I got my engine bay looking SUPER clean. Last summer I installed a cat-back exhaust and put a high flow cat to give it a nice grumble to the V6... alot of people tell me it sounds like an 8. I would like to know from those that have headers on there V6, if it does a difference in sound and if you could also post a pic to see the difference in looks (im sure it looks way better then the old brown manifolds.

thanks

I have a 2.5 in system from the cat on back with a dynomax muffler. It sounded pretty good before the headers, and became quite a bit louder after installing the headers.

A little too loud for me at certain rpms while accelerating, but sounds nice most of the time. The exhaust note rattles a lot more stuff in the car now too.

I tried to post a pic of my engine, but I already posted it during the installation several months ago, so it wouldn't let me do it, and searching for the thread didn't turn up anything for some reason, so yes, it does look better.

Re: for those who have headers

Ok I have the headers on my 3.1L. The car at idle can sound like a 5.0 (305) but at higher RPM's the exhaust gets raspy and sounds bad but you have to expect that from a 189CU V6 motor with headers and a V8 muffler on it. I wouldn't worry about the sound its just a lil louder than what your car is now. The rumble the exhaust puts out is enough to rattle my house when i start it up. From the headers the exhaust goes into a high flow cat 2.5inch dynomax mid pipe and a flowmaster 80 series muffler. One more thing the headers look much nicer than the manifolds but you should put some type of coating on them because they will rust withing a week.

Re: for those who have headers

search ebay user "........" and there are 3 pics of my engine bay up there showing the headers. You could more then likely search on my user name here and find some of mine.

I noticed at idle it gave it more rumble, but at wot it sounded worse.

I wish I did that. As soon as you crank your motor for the first time with the headers on the paint is already burning off. Don't worry if you get smoke for a few minutes with them first on.

Re: for those who have headers

Definitely louder, my car sounds bigger than it is at idle. I live in an apartment complex and since I've installed the headers (already had high flow cat and catback) my geriatric neighbors have been complaining to management a lot more. Been here since July last year and management has file full of noise complaints . The only thing I dislike is that they sound a little raspy at higher rpms, but I'm hoping that can be fixed with a resonator.

Re: for those who have headers

im going to go against the norm here, i didnt notice much of a difference in sound when i put mine on. i noticed a bit of sound and performance difference, but not a whole lot. although, i am running a 3.4, so that may have some to do w/ the performance part of it.

If you think that it would pass noise level according to police. Go up to the PD, or state inspection station and have them write a letter saying that the car passes the DB level. Complex cant do jack $hit.

Re: for those who have headers

I'm thinking about getting a quieter muffler actually when it comes time for it. I'd like to stay with the 2.5 in. I'll have to do my homework though on what's the quietest. At the moment I have a dynomax.

Re: for those who have headers

dynomax is the quietest from my findings. Sounds like you have almost the same setup as me.

If there complaining about that, there to old Even my 55yo dad likes the sound of the dynomax.

Re: for those who have headers

drdave on your 3.4L do you have your headers hooked up to your stock exhaust system. If so the stock muffler and size wont allow for much of a sound or performance change

no, my headers connect to a Catco converter and then to the Dynomax cat-back. it will change performance because the most restrictive part of the entire exhaust system is the manifolds, well unless you have a plugged cat. ive gotta imagine that the performance and sound would still change, but probably not as much as it would with a cat-back and a new converter.

Re: for those who have headers

I have info on this page that will help with advice. I have tried several different things on this car over about 15 years before and after header install. What worked great before header install was obnoxiously fartcannish after header install. This new setup was tailored out of a few different tries after header install and I finally nailed something I am very happy with.

Re: for those who have headers

Grade 8 is the hardness of metal. You can find grade 8 bolts at any industrial hardware store. You don't need to spen money on fancy locking header bolts, they are actually a PITA to retorque. The problem alot of hotrodders have is not retorqueing the header bolts after the first time they drive the car and get things up to operating temps. Its a pain, but you should realy try and retorque them when they are warm because they loosen with heat applied so get the motor hot then retorque them when it cools a little but is still on the very warm side. I forget the size and pitch of the 60*V6 studs but I thnk off hand they are 10x 1.25 and should get bolts about 1 1/4 inch long for headers.
I personally rub a dab of copper antiseize header sealant on my bolt threads before installing.

Re: for those who have headers

Pacesetter is the only brand that makes headers for our car. I bought the stage 8 locking header bolts, but they were the 8mm x 1.25, I don't believe they sell stage 8 in 10mm x 1.25.

Yes and no.Technically, they are the only smog legal ones if you are subject to smog inspections. Otherwise, Hooker and Hedman both made headers that are still ocationally found- I sold a set of each of them a year or two back to other members. Also, PF&E in Michigan makes custom stainless steel headers that are far nicer than the pacesetters, but trying to pass smog is a little more tricky.

They make 3.4 ones for the 4th gen f-bodys.

If your putting them in a 3rd gen, you need to get the 2.8 3rd gen ones.

This paint is the "shipping" or "Packing" paint, its designed to burn off.

I stripped mine, and then painted with high temp paint. You then have to bake the paint on basically cure it with the engine heat. Run the car a few minutes let it get up to temp then shut her off for awhile. Do this a few times and your paint wont flake off and your headers wont rust. Mine are still black a few years later (matte black anyways)

Yes I looked them up using make model and so on, if you do an engine search then they come up fine.
