easy mods

Hey guys i have an 88 firebird with the 2.8l v6 in it and i was wondering if you would by chance know of some easy and reletively cheap modifications that would make it any faster. I was mainly wondering is if i was to retime it would it make that much of a difference to bother with it. I would also like it to shift harder without having to put a shift kit in it. I heard that if you put thicker tranny fluid in that should help. Any help is greatly appriceated.

whats cheap you can through a nos system 50 - 150 shot on there for a couple hundred bucks it will give you the most bang for your buck other than a blower

I've never heard of thicker tranny fluid, nevermind putting it in for it to shift harder. You'd have to put a shift kit, retiming I think helps a little but you have to run high octane fuel or it'll detonate or something. As far as mods go do TomPs tune up first and then

tomp tune up always #1.

Then intake
then exhaust.

Check/replace the timing chain. Then after that its whatever you want to do.

150shot on a used 2.8 will create a bang for sure, but not the best for his buck, more like the worst for his buck.

Also, never seen a 4speed manual on a 88bird, mind showing us some pics of that?

I'm thinking he has a 700r4 and instead of putting in "automatic" he put how many speeds...."like it to shift harder"

Car: 91 Firebird
Engine: 3.1 V6
Transmission: TH-700-R4
Gut the Airbox
Throttle Body Coolant Bypass (Search for that one)
Cut off the Cat
Port/Polish/Descreen MAF
Get rid of AC/Smog (Frees up some weight+Cut parasitic drag, lose the condensor/compressor)
Weight Reduction ( Spare, Jack, Crap in the backseats/Trunk)
Relocation of Inlet Air Temp Sensor or the old IAT resistor mod ( Regular gas not recommended with IAT mod)
Custom PROM burning if you know software and tuning tables etc..

Maybe, you could bump up the ignition timing a few degrees but you need to run 91+ octane

If you are good with tools and motors, you can port/polish the plenum/throttle body a tiny bit, hell do the heads while your at it..

Dales correct you should not run a 150 shot i just put that there because the kits are sold with a 50 75 100 and 150 shot if you did go that high you would most likely burn your piston but you could run 50 - 75 with out a problem all day long my buddy had a 2.8 auto with nitorus 75 shot the car had 178000 miles on it but i would not go past that the cold air intake and exhaust are great mods also but 4-5 hp maybe from an intake another 4-5 for the exhaust the nitrous kits about 300.00 - 400.00 with the exhaust and intake your already over that plus getting into porting if you dont do it corectly you can actually hurt your hp its better that be left done by an intake shop hope this helps

Hey guys thanks for the info. Ive got the money but i need to figer out witch motor would be best to swap with the 2.8 in the bird. My choices are a 283,305,or a 350. I tryed to get my hands on a 327 but i didnt have enough not that the guy would sell it anyway. Im looking for power when I need or want it but would also like to have decent gas millage. Im kinda leaning towards the 283 cause its the cheapest but the 350 not much more. Any feedback would be great. Heres a pic of the bird. Ill put more on later.

Don't cut off the cat, it doesn't do crap unless your cat is really bad.

Woohoo!!! that should be good for about 2/10ths of a second.

All that stuff will do is keep you busy for a couple weekends and give you a nice placebo effect. You'll know you worked on the car and that theoretically everything you did makes it function better, so you believe that its faster... but in reality it won't make a bit of difference around town.

If you want to spend a bit of money and have an improvement that you can feel that isn't subjective but something easily quantified that will make you feel good... Put nitrous on it.

As for a V8 swap, you'd be further ahead to sell the car for $500 and go buy a V8 that runs and drives for $1000. Otherwise you'll have $600-1000 in the engine, another $150-1000+ for the trans, then you need motor mounts, a radiotor, exhaust, pulleys and accessory brackets, springs, fuel lines, carb, intake, rah rah rah rah rah... you get the idea.

Nitrous will cost you as little as $300 if you can find a used kit, up to about $450 if you buy a new kit. It takes about an afternoon to install, and will be a noticable improvement. The only downside is refilling the bottle frequently. My 3.1 tolerates a 115hp wet shot with over 150,000 miles on the odometer. It eats it up.
