Tech Install, LB8 Intake Onto 90-92 Camaro
Ok, another tech write up for me. I've been asked the 2nd time about this. I dont mind giving the info, just hate typing it.
Ok, the lb8 intake was a stock intake for the 85-89 camaros with v6 engine. It was tested by a former board member, and up to over 5000rpm, proved to be the lest resistant intake he could come up with. As well as it looks stock for smog states
This will NOT work on firebirds as the front of the car slopes to much. Sorry people, should have gotten a camaro j/k
What to do.
First, find one. You need the lower section, upper section, maf, flex tube. 2 new filters.
Open the hood, take everything from the throttle body forward out, and lay it off to the side. There is a small pipe that comes from the right valve cover the the flex pipe, leave it hanging for now, you still need it.
Next, you need to extend the IAT/MAT (whichever you call it). It is laying in that area where the air filter use to be. You will be relocating it to above the radiator. I suggest soldering the connections, however butt splice should work. Remember, electricty takes the path of least resistance. So make this short, but out of the way of things tugging on it. I routed mine along with the headlight harness that is in the core support area.
Next, behind the nose piece, their is a black plasic panel that comes in handy for holding bolts while working under the hood. That needs to come out. Mine has 3 snap pops, and 4 9/32 screws.
Next, Take the lower section of your new intake, and drop it in that new gap you made. Should fasten in, in the same exact locations.
:: Modifications can be done, and are quite commenly done do this part. Ranging from removing the water delectors, to cutting the whole bottom out of this. Your choice as to what you want to do.
Next, Drop in your 2 new filters, and latch down the upper half.
Plug in your re-routed IAT/MAT sensor.
:: Modifications. I noticed in the rear outlet of the upper half, their is a glue lip from the factory on these. I ground this down, and what I couldnt grind down, I filled the rest in with JB Weld for a smooth flow transition.
Next, Hook the MAP on the back of the upper section. You will not be plugging any wires into the MAP, as the 3.1 system doesnt use this.
::modifications. Since the 3.1 doesnt use a MAP, you can completely gut the inside of this out. Be careful that once your done, their are no loose fragments of anything, as it will be sucked right into the engine.
Next, Hook up the flex tube, plug the tube from the right valve cover to this.
This should be everything. If anyone reads this and knows I left a part out, please let me know.
I took pictures of this, I will be editing and posting later today.

Step 4, mod. This is a stock lower section. Where above is kinda hacked up and painted to match. (image slightly over exposed to help show detail)

Step 5 I shouldnt have to explain. But here is the mod diagram.
Circled part is what I ground down. Arrows shows where I filled with with my buddy JB weld

Step 6. Maf slides in the rear, their is a tab on the upper section, and notch on the maf for "correct direction". Picture here is of gutted maf.

Car looks great Jay.
Just a word of caution, keep an eye out on that JBweld on the plastic as it heat cycles over time (dual snorkel gets a little hot sitting atop the stock radiator) in case it were to come loose and suck down into the motor.
I still haven't forgotten avbout you on those header gaskets- I have still unexpectedly been so busy I have not made it over to that part of town as expected. The industrial hardware store and the welding supply shop are 1 block away from there so I will be going by there some day soon within the next few weeks. I will get the VW gaskets and get them to you someday soon, I just can't promise when yet. My appologise because I really thought I would have gotten them by now.

when i did the front clip swap on the firebird i put the camaros latch on the firebird and the dual snorkel fits just fine
hood closes its just no one takes out the steel brace to do a test fit and it sits higher so that is why they do not fit
btw the intake also came on tpi v8s you dont only have to look for the v6 one
also remember to remove the baffles there screwed on the the bottom unit to allow for more air or justcut out the bottoms

From what I can tell, one must use a v6 upper half, as the v8's dont have the IAT/MAT sensor. I've not seen this in person to verify, word of mouth.

my intake came off a 89 305 iroc and it had the temp sensor
it was just the incorrect sensor and was throwing codes i had to use the sensor from my stock air box/tube thing lol
btw is there anything to replace the rubbertube/maf with
its really kind of ugly
also why do you not keep the 16s on the car ?
it dosnt change the speedo at all and it just handles better in general
or do you have roads like me ruts all over
