calling all tranny guru's
i am wanting to regear my borg warner T5 to get the best acceleration and top speed out of my camaro,
by the time i am done i should have aobut 350hp at the flywheel, i haven't finished the engine by no means yet, but i would like to get the tranny regeared as soon as possible, any ideas as to what gear ratios and such to use? i would like to do it myself rather than to take it to a shop and have them do it. any suggestions? this is the first time i have ever really messed with tranny's. i usually just send them out to have them regeared!

Acceleration and top speed is based on more then just tranny.
You got rear end gear ratio, diameter of tires/wheels, rotating mass of driveshaft parts and such, overall vehicle wieght, areodynamics, vibration, loss of power through drivetrain, etc... etc...

Axle/Gears: 3.23? I'm not sure
DO NOT REGEAR IT YOURSELF lol. I am a Transmissoin diagnostic/Rebuild Major in college... and there is a TON More to it than you think. Rebuilding transmissions is hard confusing stuff. Slight mistake *so slight that even a piece of fiber from your rag* can grenade the tranny. I haven't heard of getting diffrent ratios for inside the tranny, but even if it were possible, Take it somewhere Just get a good ratio for the rear

i didn't think that it was something i wanted to do myself, but i figured that i would ask someone that knows. i know that you can have the tranny regeared, cause i have had it done before, but it is not cheap, and i already gonna change the rear. i just want something that better makes use of the engine's powerband, and something that is not so narrowly geared. i mean at 6,000 when i shift while racing, i get a 1,000 rpm drop. that is gonna suck when i finally get this thing regeared considering that the powerband is from 3500 to 7,000. that is a powerband of 3,500 rpm. nowhere near the 1,000 of the stock tranny. i want better use of the power i will be making, know what i mean.

WHAT COULD BE WISER tho more expensive is
a direct fit replacment tranny of several brands out in the current marketplace.
FROM WHAT I HEAR, these 5-speeds of ours just can't handle "much" due to "size of innards".
THAT SAID,
I know new stick trannys with double overdrive, gear cluster changes & such, are pricey as in the $1500 & upper range.
I DO KNOW that the Ford Top Loader tranny is a very "simple" tranny for gear cluster changing.
I know the Munice is "harder for same gear change" results.
But 3rd Gen 5-speeds, they are different & apparently weak. Which is why GM never really offered these 5 speed tranny rides behind the 350 engines, until later on.
I know you can find some of the tranny shops in Car Craft & Hot Rod magazines in back advertising sections.
And also look at "Classic Industries" for their conversion kits of sticks & OD trannys for old musclecars.
IF I wanted to do a double overdrive stick to my 1967 Camaro (4-speed Mucnie M-21), these days it's only a matter of a credit card approval.
For my stick I'd almost go with a rear tranny attachment gear splitter set up. Gear Vendors is the place. Those Gear Vendors can handle like 700 foot pounds of torque & live to the next shift. This Gear Vendors was used by Joel Rosen of Motion Performance on his rides he produced.
1,000 RPM between gear shifts isn't so bad. Mearly get into the power band & above before ya upshift. I did that alot back on my old 1966 Corvette (M-20 tranny, different gear ratios than a M-21/M-22, which is why M-20 is called a wide ratio & the others are the close ratio). It's easy & fun to learn the powerband as when the cam comes onto the powerband.
