Hole in exhaust, V6 sounds good

Hole in exhaust, V6 sounds good
Yeah so, right at the end of the I-pipe where the hangar is welded on to the pipe is majorly rusted. There was a gaping hole and the I-pipe was sitting on the axle brace. So I ripped the hangar off all together and hung the exhaust from the tail pipe (like on the driver's side). I used some fiberglass muffler tape but it didn't stick. So now there's this big hole. But the exhaust sounds good... loud, but good. No, it doesn't sound like a V8. It sounds something like a Porsche exhaust (don't flame me, I'm not saying my car sounds like a Porsche). And, to top it all off, the car is running better.

I liked the sound of my car when the cat blew off neighbors hated me. I drilled a few holes in this El Camino I'm working on (the exhaust was already rusted and I'm replacing it), sounds very nice and gave it a little gain in power.

Well, I finally got around to fixing the hole with a little help from my friend muffler tape. I also had to jack the muffler up a bit because it was hitting the suspension again. Despite the fact that I've lost horsepower, the backfire is 90% gone. So the car is quieter in two ways. I'm certain that next summer when I have some money, and I can afford a new exhaust from engine to tailpipes, then the car will get some power back. But for now, I'll have to put up with it.

So it doesnt have a muffler? It didn't have one when I bought it, but it runs fine. Im putting a V-8 in soon anyways, so the stock exhaust is getting chucked.
And other than a missing muffler, its in very nice condition.

I never said I have a problem with people who's exhaust is rusted through, incomplete or otherwise broken in some way. These are are old cars, it happens. The exhaust on my car rusted through a while back as a matter of fact.
I find it hard to believe that someone would consider a rotted off exhaust better than a complete exhaust in any way, though. Sure, I don't have a problem with people who can't afford a new exhaust right away, but don't go bragging about it like you just got an entire exhaust complete with headers and a catback:

Well for starters, who was bragging? I simply said that because of this hole that I wasn't able to plug, I got a little boost in performance. Not say that I'm going to leave a hole in my exhaust and called it a mod, just to say that my exhaust needs to be replaced because it is hurting the engine. If you ever read any of my other posts (which you probably didn't because you clearly just came into the V6 forum to make yourself feel better by insulting other people), you'd know that I'm constantly trying to track down the reason my car doesn't run so well.
As for the Porsche comment:
It sounds something like a Porsche exhaust (don't flame me, I'm not saying my car sounds like a Porsche).
Note that I said sounds something like a Porsche to convey the tone of the exhaust, but to keep trolls like you from making moronic comments I had to stress that I wasn't comparing my car to a Porsche. You know what is kinda funny? Someone here gets his panties in a bunch because he sayss that no exhaust makes a car a hillbilly car, and gives everyone a bad image. Perpetuates a stereotype. Maybe V6 owners are a little touchy when V8 owners come to the V6 forum just to make useless comments, but I disagree that we (thirdgen owners) are argumentative. I appreciate these boards a great deal due to the high quality of advice and ideas brought by the members. The only thing wrong is people who like to troll and people who give bad advice, but this is unavoidable no matter where you are.

I agree trolling is wrong, and should not be tolerated. SImply put though, the stereotype does exist about thirdgen owners. Exactly as I have put it above. When you tell someone on the net that you have a thirdgen, they already have a stereotype of you. Want proof? Go look in the theoretical racing board here. Perfect example.

camaro_junkie, I would have said the same thing to a V8 owner if they posted something like this. A broken exhaust isn't better than a properly-functioning exhaust, no matter whether it's a V6 or a V8. If your "butt dyno" tells you that you're getting better performance with the hole in the exhaust than you did before, obviously something was wrong way before this issue came up.
I still have a bone to pick with you about the car sounding "something like a Porsche" but not actually sounding like a Porsche... but for the sake of not arguing, I'll just keep it to myself.
I'll conclude with this: It's not very hard for me to tell why people stereotype these cars when the people who drive them consider broken parts an "improvement" over properly functioning ones.
If I offended you, I'm sorry... but seems like in this world you can't say more than "I think..." before some claims to be offended.

I guess since I deduced you were boasting about how a hole in your exhaust made your exhaust better by reading the topic of the thread (Hole in exhaust, V6 sounds good) and by reading the latter part of your first post, that makes me a complete idiot. I should have known all along that you were REALLY talking about some sort of problem you were having with your car, even though you make no mention of it in that post.

I could sit here all day saying "I just added a cold air intake and it improved my car's performance by 20 HP throughout the powerband!" But who's gonna believe me until I post some evidence that proves it?

If you had a severely restricted exhaust and removed that restriction by punching a hole in the exhaust before that restriction, you would definitely notice an improvement. You don't need dyno numbers, it's a physical must. Try blocking the exhaust ports on your engine, then try letting them run open. Get back to me on which one worked better. Really I have a muffler shop replaced exhaust from the cat back. the just used their pipe and duplicated the factory set up when mine rusted out 10 years ago... They used the stock 2.25 size pipe and crimp bent it...
Nate...you need some numbers to prove my purposeful hole made a difference in my stock sized exhaust....here you go!

This was after installing the new headers…still working out bugs on the engine, like fuel and timing…still no custom chip!
Max Power = 125.9 @ rear wheels (+20%) = 151.08hp @ the fly wheel
Max Torque = 203.1 @ rear wheels (+20%) = 243.72ft-lbs @ the fly wheel
So I got some HP#s, but lost some torque, arrgh….

Now we opened the newly installed cutout to see what would happen….
Max Power = 134.1 @ rear wheels (+20%) = 160.92hp @ the fly wheel
Max Torque = 207.4 @ rear wheels (+20%) = 248.88ft-lbs @ the fly wheel
The hp#s… cutout gave: 8.2hp
Got some of the torque back… cutout gave: 4.3ft-lbs

I like it. With my cam it has quite a lope...people really think its an 8. Upper RPM its starts sounding 6ish...but the cam sure helps alot. Its loud...the sound proofing I did is the only reason its tolerable to drive like that on a daily basis...plus its fun to watch peoples reaction when you get on it! When I do cap it I can so feel the power diff. Feels like a diff car! So much more powerful with it open!
On a stock V-6 i think it might be a bit too much. Know a guy with a 3.4 4th gen...he has straight pipes, no muff or cats...sounds crappy when he romps on it. There is a definite different sound b/w my 3.4 and his! Now if I could learn to get the sound clips on the web I would let you guys all take a listen! Heck I would get his and mine and it would shock you how diff it sounds!
