Gas cap identity?
Are there two different types of gas gaps for our cars? The counter guy asked if I wanted a vented one or not. How do I know which one I have? I thought that if your car didn't make that whooshing noise when you remove the cap, that it was a sign of a bad cap? Right now, my cap doesn't make that noise.

Originally your car had a non-vented cap. If you've removed the charcoal canister and plugged the vent line you'll need a vented one.

you should have a non-vented cap. The wooshing sound is just ressure escaping...not a bad thing. If your car doesn't make that sound then something in the evap system is bad and leaking all that pressure out. usually the gas cap. is the rubber seal around the old one cracked? If so , replace it. BTW, why would anyone remove the charcoal canister??? I just don't understand that idea.

Yeah, I don't understand why people do that either. I guess they think it hurts horsepower? They probably just see it and think "I should get rid of that" without bothering to find out what it really does!

not to steal the original post or anything, but if you are having a problem with the canister(i.e. overflowing or anything like that), then you have a problem in the purge control system and a problem with the vapor seperator, which just removing the canister is not going to help.

I have run both with no side effects. I got one of them gas caps that has a built in filler hole flap. So you can fill up without taking the cap off. Though I move it around. Right now its on my Buick.

Where is the cannister supposed to be located? If my car has onethen I need a nonvented cap correct? And, if my car has a cannister then when you remove the non-vented cap is should make that whooshing sound, correct?

All vehicles should make the whooshing sound under normal conditions(unless it's figgin' cold outside). You should have the canister in the front right behind one of the headlights. You SHOULD have the non-vented cap.
