The difference 2.8 and 3.1

Im new to the camaro scene so Ill start off with what I have. I just got a 90 Rs 2.8 camaro for 500 dallors. She has 84k on her, my pal told me he had a 3.1 engine and tranny from a blazer sitting in his garuge and he said i can have it for nothing.

My question is is it worth the swap? What else do I have to change other then the engines wires cpu or anything?

Also if anyone can point me to the 2.9 V6 info that would be great so I can get to work. thanks guys

ed

Oooooookay. For starters, the blazer didn't get a 3.1... they were 2.8 TBI. Second, the 90-92 V6 camaros were 3.1s... so.. uhm... seriously... try again

Even if it were a late 3rd gen 2.8, a 3.1 swap wouldn't be worth it unless it were a rebuilt 3.1 or the 2.8 were in really crappy condition. The only real power difference between the two is that the 3.1 has about 5 hp more than the 2.8, not really worth doing a whole engine swap over. BTW, welcome to the boards.

not worth the swap unless the above examples apply... if you wanted to swap a motor in for a power gain, do the 3.4 swap

the vortec 4.3 might be a good swap... but dont grill me i'm buying my first v6 car shortly ive had 9 irocs and t/a's so im new to this also... i just know the vortec 4.3 is a 350 minus 2 cylinders... many 350 mods will work on it

the thing with the 4.3 is that its a 90* v6... ur essentially going to the trouble of bolting in a v8, so if you were gonna do that, you might as well just go v8. the reason i suggested a 3.4 is that its the most powerful 60* v6, and it'll bolt right in... it'll bolt up to your existing motor mounts as well as your transmission, and you can just add all your 2.8 intake manifold stuff ontop of it and what not..

that's right, the 4.3 swap is a pretty major thing. the 3.4 swap is pretty simple. also, many 4.3 performance parts are rather expensive...more so than the 60* parts, typically.

yes, the 3.1 only came with about 5 hp more than the 2.8 but didn't it have like 20 ft. lbs of torque more?? that's the big difference in their power! and the 3.4 has a little more hp and tq than the 3.1...

Yeah, but that's because the 3.1 was stroked. So the powerband moved down lower- good for off the line, but not good for WOT blasts. Guys with manual trannies would shift earlier than redline, and automatic trans guys would have to make sure their governor was calbrated to upshift at the high end of the powerband. A 3.1 might seem zippy around town, but at WOT it won't seem much faster than a 2.8.

That's why I'll rebuild a 2.8, and won't put a 3.1 in my Firebird. I want my motor to scream at 6K as I run down the track.

Hey I just searched for rpm & horsepower, and found this slick little page; the waterwheel comparison was pretty slick: http://vettenet.org/torquehp.html

TomP - You'd be suprised what a turbo, cam and a 3.1 can do together - that extra stroke is NICE for building power.

Think 350 vs 383

looks as though my new intake will include more than a new TB and modified upper plenum. looks like it will include 65mm TB, double-stock sized plenum with BIG runners and possibly fully custom middle section... with this, 6k rpms with good hp should be nooo problem. ...on a 3.1...
