Gumby help with fuel pump removal please!

Hey there,

I seen the pictures you posted on cutting the rear area to remove the fuel pump. After a small bit this eve I have managed to chop and cut and butcher my car (not as pretty as your looks)

I know a lot of people don’t agree with the cut and remove type job that I am doing but its simple like this for me (my car is a 89 with 81k and I plan on keeping the dang thing till the tires fall off or until the body falls off the frame, and then it will still most likely be sitting in my garage.)

I was wondering now the question is this... you unhooked the lines in front of the drivers side rear tire right? Then how did you get the metal lines to clear near the gas tank to pull the pump from the tank? I just wanted to make sure before I kill the pipes and have to replace those also (added expense to an unexpected failed part is never good) I would be so thankful if you could help me out on this one.

Thanks for any help from anyone

Donnie H.

Nope man I didn't do that. I just keep the pics around. I would how ever do that if I didn't have the funds for that MSD inline pump.

You could cut those pipes n just piece them together with rubber hose n clamps.

From them pic though it look like he cut the hole wide to the right to maybe work them out?

if you use rubber hose and clamps, more than likely youll blow the hose off. it would be fine if the car was carbureted and only put out a few psi, but putting out over 40 is gonna blow the clamps eventually (from experience). maybe with 2 EFI clamps on each end of the hose, but i still wouldnt do it. best bet would be to cut them and then reflare them.

I cut ALL 4 tubes about 2 inches from the 90 degree bend (directly on top of the fuel tank).
When you see the 4 tubes make the 90 degree bends, you'll know what I'm talking about.
I used neopreme hose and regular hose clamps to junction the cut tubes back together (no, they won't be blown off by 50# fuel pressure).

As far as sealing the area up when you're done... go to any home supply warehouse (Home Depot, Wal Mart, etc.) and get a small length of Roofing "Ice and Water Shield" to seal up the area that was cut out. Ice and Water Shield is basically a rubberized 'sticky as flypaper' sheathing that repels water and debris.

I pop-riveted a huge piece of sheet metal (door skin thickness) on top of the cut-out area and sealed the edges w/ roofing tar to seal the access panel area shut.

Good luck.
