1987 2.8... EGR problems?
Hey guys, long time no see. I read somewhere on the net that the 1987 V-6 models had problems with the EGR valve which keeps the service engine soon light on at all times?
I've already replaced the EGR three times, number four is pushin it. Should this be something to be concerned with, or not? It now has rolled over 88,000 miles and still runs like a champ.
Thanks, Joe

Well... that won't quite work for an SES light. The diagnostic vacuum switch will still be throwing the code.
Check and replace all the vacuum lines that run between the EGR valve, the EGR solenoid, and the EGR diagnostic switch. You can use 5/16" windshield washer hose. I bet $5 you've got a crack in one of the plastic hoses.
The solenoid applies vacuum to the T-fitting on it's outlet. This fitting splits; one side goes to the EGR valve, the other side goes to the diagnostic switch. The computer turns on the solenoid- and then the computer looks for a response from the diagnostic switch. If there's a crack anywhere in the solenoid output lines or the solenoid input lines, you'll get a code.
When you've replaced the EGR valve, did they work fine for a while, and then throw a code? Or did you replace it 3 times in a row?

Third times not a charm
I replaced it that many times and each time the SES gave me the same code, as soon as the car fired up. I looked at the vacume line and it was not cracked but had a gap at the "T" part... I wrapped some electrical tape around both ends to block off any vacume leaks... but the SES still comes on and still throws the same code. The car will not throw any other codes. I'm stumped, but not at all that worried. I've put over 6k miles on this car with the problems and been alright so far.
