I had to invert the colors so you could actually see the outline of it. It mounts to the holes underneath your radiator support.

You may have to cut the bottom if you have lowering springs. I did.

You won't believe how much overheating happens IF ya keep that stupid piece of plastic off the car.
If your old bolts are rusted, no problem.
Auto store, the "Help" section, go grab a bunch of zip slip on nuts & matching bolts.

I always thought this was merely the "scrape on the ground 10 times a day" plastic piece...

Mine looks like a dog chewed on it until it fell apart...

Most everybody has or does scrape the front end of their car on something. Most of the time that piece gets ripped off by friendly neighborhood curbs or parking lot wheel stops. It goes right over them with no problem. But when ya leave it doesn't seem to want to go back over very easily. <SNAP> And ya don't really notice (here at least) untill Summer time.
That piece of plastic along with the matching two on the sides of it are the main component to what deflects the cool air going right under the car up to the radiator.
You could take a brand new Third Gen with Zero miles on it (if you could find one) take these pieces off and no matter what type of cooling system you have it will overheat very shortly.

Hey ScrapMaker,
I have those same Infinty 4x6's but I couldn't get them to fit in my dash.
The Magnets are too big and the speaker wouldn't sit all the way down for the screws to go in let alone the dash pad to go back on.
How'd you do it?

Well Alpha Audio forced me to let them install them to keep the warranty... but I asked them and they said no problem, and they didn't have to drill/cut/squeeze or anything, and they don't sound distorted or anything...

So maybe I'll pull off the dash in few days and take a look... They could be lying for all I know.

(don't let anyone install this for you... they will crack your dashboard!)

My dash looked flawless.. nice and soft and well-kept... when all the sudden... BAM!... a car audio installer comes by and DESTROYS IT! Now it looks like its split from sun damage from drying up... and there is a nice little hump like its been bolted down improperly at the bottom...

oh well they gave me a "deal" on some HQ tint... but IMO it wasn't worth it... I still paid $250 for the tint, when at Mother's Window Tint the same job with no "sweet deal" is only $99... Go figure....

Oh well sorry for my ranting, but everytime ANYONE touches my car... it gets totally screwed up... I'm not sure if I should be included or not

oh yeah... they totally ripped off the damned speaker grills, ON BOTH SIDES!!!

This was after I specifically told them that these do not come off... and the guy (the installer) told me that they have done these cars a million times...

ARG!!!

Thanks for the reply.
I figured there had to be more to the installation. From what I could see in mine the ducts that feed the side vents on the dash pad would need to be...
A: ) Removed
or
B: ) Remanufactured to go around the opening
Those were the only thing in the way on mine. The speakers would go into the opening but would stop about half an inch from sitting flush. With longer screws and spacers they could be installed but the dash pad would not fit.
If your dash is cracked now then that is probably what they did. I had no problem removing the grills from the pad either. They popped right out and right back in no prob.
Thanks for the info though.

thing is, its bowed up in the middle... not on the left... so I don't know.

Also I am pretty sure that these speaker grilles are not supposed to come off. I have read many install guides... plus these grilles to do not just pop off.. When you take off the dash pad they are attached... to get mine off (by breaking them) they pryed them right off... without thinking, or calling me... then they realized that you HAVE to take off the pad to get to the installation screws.

The ONLY thing that pisses me off about the kappa 4x6's is that part of our grills covers about 1/2 of the tweeter.. which is the most important part on the speaker (for the front)... I'm thinking about using an exacto knife and "making" some more grille slots...

Dunno how that would work... or maybe just fabricate some totally new grilles that still look good, but that's beyond me.

also... does anyone happen to know how to make your signature automatically appear at the end of your post, instead of having to click the check box? Just annoys me, but I could see if it was on purpose to conserve storage on the server.

this is all really odd to me....i have the same plate speakers and they fit no problem. Sat nicely and bolted down as easily as the stock ones. My side vent passages did not have to be moved or anything....maybe its because mine is 89..??? i dont know, but they fit like a dream...and sound even better...just need to get new 6x9s because they are blown like u wouldn't believe.

I bet they would have told me if they had to cut or drill or move anything, so I think they fit fine, they just didn't know my grilles didn't come off

well, in a given thread you only realy need your signature the firs post you make, so it makes sense. people who put there sig aftereverypost just make the page longer. it's just fluff at that point and realy un-needed. no offense to anyone. it is just one of those things.

and yes, somwhere in the prefferences section there is a box you can check that will meke "allways display my signature " yhe default. but please don't. think of the dialup users (not me, i have cable)

That's why my signature is just one line! But I'd see if you can file a damage claim against them. Those grills definately don't pop off. You "can" try to unscrew them when the dashpad is off, but chances are, the plastic has been cooked by the sun so much that the plastic studs will crack.

I'm contemplating making new grills out of old 6x9 aftermarket grills I have kicking around. Shouldn't be that hard; just some bending with my flange tool... but that's way down on the list of priorities!

Let me know where to buy replacment dashes for $100!
I got an 85 Firebird & scoring a decent dash is a mission. I'm at point of recovering in a tan suade material to match tan interior of car. Or black suade, to cut down on dash/windshield reflection.
PS Use JB WELD to hold down the grills.
Clean all surfaces, do some scuff sanding on both surfaces, very thoughly, to create a good seal surface. Lay on a generous amount, add some weights to corners, leave alone for 24 hours. Try to let cure for the 24 hours, outdoors, not in sunlight (for extrmeme lengths of time). The heat/cooling 24 hour curing cycle, object shaped to form, can do wonders in holding power.

Is it those plastic cover items, slips/adheres on top of old dash?
I've seen replacement dashes going for $300+ thru Classic Firebird.

look here... its $80

I think its repro... but still...

I'd swear I saw an oem version a while back for 100 bucks...

this is pissing me off, because they only gave me $100 discount at the store... so I still paid $250 for tint/install... when mother's window tint would have done the same install for $99... man I always get the shaft

I bought a 1963 Grand Prix out in Hollywood CA for by Brother.
Shipped car back east.
I found a "good dash for it".
Shipped dash back east.
I now owe him re-furbish of that shattered dash board at Just Dashes for about $800!
Yeah $150 for a used dash? Unless I put my hands on it and carry it to car, I'll buy new.
I knew your option may have been that plastic slip over cover. THANKS for tossing out idea & trying to find the real score, tho!

I could have sworn that I found a real one for 100 buck somewhere.. because when the guy at the audio store broke my dash board, he told me that he was looking around and saw that it was about 100 bucks for a replacement, and that's what I thought I saw too, so I went ahead and allowed him to do a 100 dollar discount on my tint, but I still wasn't 100% happy with the tint, and that I would still have to do the labor on the dash myself... but now I'm infuriated if it is really going to cost like 300 bucks!!!

What's this "Just Dash"? Are there places that can make my dash like new, or is not worth it?

Hit the junkyards, man... I got a perfect one for $10. I meant to use it in 10 or 20 years when my dashboard finally cracked.

Then one freezing cold morning in NJ, I came outside, and my dashboard was cracked. Damn friggin' cold weather. And it happened to a few other NJ guys too that same night! See https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=218174 for more info.

So now, my current cracked dash is going to be my "winter dash" from now on.

And that means I still have to find and buy a perfect dash to keep inside so I can use it in 10 or 20 years....

The options are:
A Tom mentioned, wrecking yard.
YET in SOCAl, the reason we have rust free stuff, is the reason we seek new Vinyl stuff!!!
A $10 dashboard HAHA I was offered a cracked one like mine for $50!!!!!
Other options are
New from place like Classic Camaro/Firebird mail order. New dash will be available forever, so I seek to experiment on mine for cheap apply a suade/vinyl cover over mine & be done.
The "Just Dashes" can CERTAINLY restore your dash.
They use a process, a "lost art", to reapply vinyl over the old dash. Seriously rebuild it.
Been to place and it's very cool!
www.justdashes.com I believe is web site.
YET that is so expensive I suggest ya find cheapie used (lucky!!) or bite it and buy new.
OR IF the receipt contains language that says "$100 off due to damage caused by stereo install" ya simply go back with catalog from Classic Camaro/Firebird and show them item number G8788 @$350 or # G8789 @$525 www.classicindustries.com
Renegotiate your money & also mention to them to poor tint work.
PS Small Claims court!

I went in the day after to ask them about a few small ripples ont he back hatch window... and they guy was like.. "Damn do you know how hard that window is? I've never seen one come out this well in my entire career..."

I thought to myself... there has to be over a hundred different types of cars that have really curved rear windows... so I will just go in if it starts to bother me

I paid my friend's boyfriend $50 to tint my rear window back in 1994, "tint included", so it really only cost me $30. He did an amazing job; barely any ripples. Only hard spot he had was in the uppermost corners. I got compliments on it all the time. He did the window in four pieces- which I had never seen before.

Then the tint faded... then I tried to re-tint it myself, following his cut lines- and did pretty good! But I never put the third (middle) piece back on. Now the whole thing is faded to "almost clear" again, from 5% vis. At least it didn't fade purple on me! I think next I'll be stripping both layers off, and maybe either bringing it somewhere, or buying that high-dollar tint. (sigh)

thing is, I go there all the time... but now I have realized I can get things on the internet for less than half the price... literally... I have never had to use a warranty, and there are always manufacturer's warranties... so screw the high prices...

I think I might have signed something that screwed me... but I can't remember...
