Rear Main Seal Leak
I have a oil leak from my Rear Main Seal. Not so much of a big deal I can just keep putting oil in it! The problem is this oil leak has caused my starter to go out. I have just put a new starter in and dont' want to be doing that again. My question is about how much would it cost for a shop to install the rear main seal. I know the actual gasket is not that much around $25.00 Any suggestions would be apperciated

When I hear Rear Main Seal, I think of the seal for the crankshaft
In that case you'll probably be paying a bit to have that one done. Its also not much fun to do it youself.

Don't scare him!
LOL. It's actually a pretty simple job (I use the word "simple" loosely...). All you have to do is pull the transmisson back (by unbolting the bellhousing bolts and flywheel bolts). Once you get it moved far enough back (the crossmember bolts will also be out), You sholud be able to get at the seal and replace it. Just support the trnny on a floor jack and roll it out of the way, pretty easy job on a RWD car.

BE SURE ITS THE REAR MAIN SEAL FIRST! I had a oil leak towards the back and saw it coming off my bellhousing caked in oil. So I replaced my rear main seal and it was still there. Turned out to be the distributor O-Ring gasket. I suggest you replace that first and see how it goes. If not its your rear main seal and its not so hard to do if you know how to pull a transmission off.

oh yeah, i forgot about that darn distributor leak. My car even had that when I got it
Don't get me wrong, you don't really need any extra skills or really knowledge for that matter, what I meant was that its not too fun lying on your back for a few hours working on it. Maybe what I should have said was not hard, but time consuming.

i thought my rear main seal was leaking too, it turned out to be the cam plate on the back side of the engine, above the rear main seal. might as well have them (or you) do both while theyre in there. the cam plate seal is a dealer only part though. i think it ran me about $6 at employee cost. if you do a search, youll see these seals are kinda common. best to just do both.
