timing is off

ive had a problem w/ running really rich and awful fuel mileage lately. i checked the timing, just out of curiosity and its at 20 degrees BTDC. now, correct me if im wrong, but this will cause it to be rich as hell right? what else can being this far off affect?

From what I understand, that would be firing too early. So, to compensate the ecu would have to give it more fuel to keep the engine running since its not as close as it should be to TDC. I don't remember exactly, but I think it's supposed to be around 12 degrees BTDC (don't have specs in front of me at the moment). Also, you probably know this already, but make sure the timing cable is disconnected so the ECU won't control the timing when your trying to set it. Another thing that can cause richness is a bad o2, bad MAF (though usually the car really dosn't want to run at all then from my experience), or a bad TPS. Hm, last but not least could be the fuel pressure regulator, but I'm thinking it's just ignition at the moment.

Also, after you reset your ignition timing, be sure to reset the ECU so it can relearn what your driving style is and relearn the engine itself. Good luck.
